Bluejay Women Clip Yellow Jackets 57-46 in Cancun Challenge Opener

Cancun, Mexico -- Keyed by a fast start, Creighton Women's Basketball defeated Georgia Tech 57-46 in its opening game of the Cancun Challenge on Thursday, November 23.
The victory moved the Bluejays to 4-1 on the season, while Georgia Tech fell to 4-1.
Celebrating Thanksgiving family style the Bluejays took turns scoring to open the contest. Seniors Emma Ronsiek and Morgan Maly were first to the table with a pair of free throws from Ronsiek and a trey by Maly. Fellow seniors Lauren Jensen and Molly Mogensen got into fun as Jensen drilled a turnaround jumper, then Mogensen delivered from long range. Sophomore Kennedy Townsend found her three-point range as Creighton raced out to a 13-4 lead (3:45). Second helpings began anew with Ronsiek, before senior Mallory Brake and Maly closed the frame to push the Bluejays out to a 19-6 lead after one period.
Georgia Tech took a stab at the table in second quarter, scoring seven straight to pull within 19-13 with 7:32 on the clock. The Yellow Jackets continued to sting Creighton, closing within one possession at 27-24 as the game moved to halftime.
Returning to the feast after halftime, the Bluejays took control with a 12-0 run. Once more Creighton began by taking turns, getting buckets from Mogensen, Jensen, Brake and Maly. A trey from Jensen shook up the rotation and gave the Bluejays a 39-24 lead (4:21).
Cruising into the dessert portion of the contest Creighton led by as much as 16 points and did not allow the Yellow Jackets closer than 10 the rest of the way.
Jensen led all scorers with 16 points, while Maly and Ronsiek finished with 11 and 10 points respectively. Brake cleaned the glass with her second consecutive 10 rebound effort and also led Creighton with three steals.
Georgia Tech got a team-high 14 points from Kayla Blackshear and 12 points from Tonie Morgan.
Creighton concludes action in Cancun Challenge on Friday, November 24 against Michigan State in a game set to begin at 3:00 pm (CT).
