Lauren Jensen's 32-Point Effort Highlights Bluejay Victory
Cancun, Mexico -- Powered by a combined 58 points from seniors Lauren Jensen and Morgan Maly, the Creighton Women's Basketball team completed a 2-0 trip to the Cancun Challenge on Friday, November 24. In its three trips to Cancun (2012, 2019 & 2023), the Bluejays are now 6-0.
Creighton moved to 5-1 on the season, while dropping Michigan State to 5-1 following Friday's result.
Trailing 5-2 (8:05) the Bluejays took control of the opening quarter with 12 consecutive points to surge ahead 14-5 (5:28). Three pointers from Maly and fellow senior Molly Mogensen flipped the early momentum, then free throws by Jensen and four straight points by senior Emma Ronsiek gave Creighton the nine-point advantage. The Bluejays pushed back to a nine-point lead at 24-15 (1:22) late in the frame, but Michigan State delivered the final bucket to send the game to the second with Creighton ahead 24-18.
After shooting 52,9% from the field in the first 10 minutes (9-for-17), the Bluejays cooled off in the second quarter, allowing the Spartans to strike. Michigan State seized the opportunity by hitting 9-of-16 shots to claim a 41-37 lead with under a minute remaining in the half. Jensen, however, gave her squad a lift with a bucket in the closing seconds to send the contest to the half with the Bluejays down 41-39 at the break.
Jensen took over in the third quarter, scoring 14 of Creighton's 22 points in the frame as Creighton flipped a two-point deficit to a 61-54 edge. Down 45-43 (8:20) a trey from Jensen (known as the LJ Trey by the voice of D.J. Sokol Arena, Lance Raabe) set off a 10-3 run. Jensen scored eight in the Bluejay run, getting the remaining bucket by Ronsiek to take a 53-48 edge (3:10). Leading 55-53 moments later, the final six points also came from Jensen to vault Creighton to its 61-54 lead as the game moved to the fourth.
Creighton extended its lead to as much as 14 down the stretch, getting 15 points from the tandem of Jensen and Maly. The Bluejays' dynamic duo equaled Michigan State in the frame to cement Creighton's victory.
Jensen led all scorers with a career-high 32 points, while Maly finished with 26. Ronsiek grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds and scored 13 points for her first double-double of the season and Mallory Brake was a defensive force with a career-high five blocked shots.
Five Spartans finished in double figures, led by 13 points from Moira Joiner. Michigan State got 11 points from Julia Ayrault, Abbey Kimball, Tory Ozment and Jocelyn Tate.
The Bluejays have 36 hours to enjoy some time in the sun, but return to the hardwood on Sunday, December 3 in a home game against Northern Iowa at 1:00 p.m.
