Three-Time First Team All-American starred at Creighton from 2010-14
OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton Men's Basketball will retire Doug McDermott's No. 3 jersey prior to its Dec. 20 home game vs. Villanova. McDermott was a three-time All-American (2012, 2013, 2014) and consensus National Player of the Year (2014) during an incredible four-year career spanning 2010-14.
McDermott finished his career with an NCAA-record 135 double-figure scoring games and wrapped up his time on The Hilltop with 3,150 points, which was fifth in NCAA history. He was named winner of the Oscar Robertson, John R. Wooden and Naismith trophies as the National Player of the Year in 2013-14, when he led the country in scoring and helped Creighton to a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The son of current Bluejay head coach Greg McDermott, Doug McDermott was a three-time Conference Player of the Year and remains the sport's only three-time consensus First Team All-American since 1985.
"We are thrilled to be able to retire Doug's jersey," said Greg McDermott. "His impact on our basketball program was immense. He and his teammates helped usher in a new era of Creighton Basketball as we entered the BIG EAST. As his Father and Coach, I look forward to celebrating him with 18,000 Bluejay faithful on Dec. 20th."
McDermott received his Marketing degree from Creighton in 2014 and is currently in his 10th year in the NBA, as a member of the San Antonio Spurs.
"We are honored to retire the jersey of Doug McDermott, one of the greatest men's basketball players in Creighton history," said Creighton's McCormick Endowed Athletic Director Marcus Blossom. "He has also been a fantastic representative of the University since his days wearing the White and Blue. Doug's impact in Omaha can't be overstated. His production in a Bluejay uniform was obviously second to none. But it was the timing of all the accolades achieved by him and his teammates that was so important to our basketball program, to the University, and to the BIG EAST. We became a national program as Doug and his teammates, under the leadership of Coach McDermott, helped usher us from the Missouri Valley Conference into the spotlight of the new BIG EAST. We needed to prove we belonged on the biggest stage and the new BIG EAST needed good teams to prove it was still the best conference for college basketball. Doug helped Creighton deliver on both of these matters of utmost significance. We obviously have a long and storied basketball history, but we may not be the basketball program we are today - one of the top programs in the country - without the contributions of Doug McDermott."
McDermott's number will hang in the rafters alongside five other Bluejay greats (#25 Kyle Korver, #30 Bob Harstad, #33 Bob Portman, #35 Paul Silas, #45 Bob Gibson).
The Dec. 20 contest against Villanova will be broadcast on FS1 and 1620 The Zone.
