Bluejays soar after a pair of impressive road wins
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's basketball team moved up two spots to eighth in this week's Associated Press Top 25 poll, tying a season-best in the writer's rankings. It's the 100th time that the Bluejays have been ranked in the AP poll under 14th-year head coach Greg McDermott.
The Bluejays are also fifth in the NET and eighth in this week's USA Today Coaches poll.
CU improved to 8-1 overall after winning its lone game last week, a 109-64 victory over Central Michigan.
This marks the 27th time in program history that Creighton has been in the AP Top 10 at any point, with all but one of those weeks happening during McDermott's tenure. Creighton's best AP ranking in program history is seventh, done five times (Jan. 16, 2017, March 10, 2020, March 18, 2020, Jan. 7, 2021 and Nov. 28, 2022).
Including today's ranking, Creighton has now been ranked by the AP 128 times in program history, with 100 of those under the direction of McDermott. Creighton is 160-64 all-time as a ranked team, including a 126-52 figure under McDermott. Creighton has been ranked at least one week in 10 of McDermott's 14 seasons on The Hilltop after doing it just five different seasons in program history before his 2010 arrival.
Creighton is one of three BIG EAST Conference schools in the top 25, joining No. 5 Connecticut and No. 7 Marquette. Arizona is atop the poll, just ahead of Kansas, Purdue and Houston.
Creighton is also one of eight schools in the country with both its men's and women's teams ranked in this week's AP Top 25, joining Baylor, Gonzaga, Marquette, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina, Texas and Connecticut.
The Bluejays return to the court on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Central with a game against UNLV in Henderson, Nev. That game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network and 1620 The Zone. Creighton also hosts Alabama, which was among the teams also receiving votes in this week's AP poll, on Saturday in a game that has been moved to 7 p.m. Central.
