OMAHA, Neb. -- Having already claimed the BIG EAST Player of the Week honor, Creighton senior Baylor Scheierman added to his accolades by earning Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week honors from the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.
Scheierman is the third player in program history to be honored with National Player of the Week recognition by the USBWA, joining Marcus Zegarowski (Feb. 25, 2020) and four-time winner Doug McDermott (Dec. 27, 2011, Dec. 18, 2012, Jan. 14, 2014, and Feb. 18, 2014).
For the 2023-24 season, the USBWA expanded its national player of the week program that has been affiliated with the Oscar Robertson Trophy since the 2009-10 season. In past seasons, the USBWA has recognized just one player each week. Each Tuesday during the regular season, designated USBWA board members will select five standouts from the 32 Division I conference players of the week to be recognized. The USBWA named five National Players of the Wee for games of the week ending Sunday, Dec. 3.

Scheierman averaged 22.5 points and 9.0 rebounds during the week, sinking nine three-pointers. He had 21 points, eight rebounds and two steals in Thursday's BIG EAST – Big 12 Battle victory at Oklahoma State. The 79-65 loss was Oklahoma State's second-largest non-conference home loss in 45 years.
Â
The Aurora, Neb,. product concluded his week by scoring 20 of his game-high 24 points in the first half of Creighton's 89-60 win over Nebraska, matching its largest margin of victory ever over its in-state rival. Scheierman made six three-pointers in the first half and remains the nation's only player with three or more three-pointers in every team game this season. Scheierman contributed 10 rebounds for his 40th career double-double, which also moved him over 1,000 career rebounds. The loss was Nebraska's largest in a non-conference home game since 1938.
Â
Scheierman's performance on Sunday moved him back atop the BIG EAST leaders with 19.3 points per game. He also paces the league with 29 three-pointers and 3.63 triples per game.
Since the 1958-59 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. In 1998, the award was named in honor of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year Oscar Robertson. It is the nation's oldest award and the only one named after a former player.
At the conclusion of the regular season, the USBWA will name finalists for the award, which is voted on by the entire membership. The winner of the award will be announced at the 2024 Men's Final Four in Glendale, Ariz., with the formal presentation to follow at the annual USBWA Awards Luncheon hosted by the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
Creighton (7-1) returns to the court on Saturday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Central Michigan on FS2 and 1620 The Zone.
