OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton men's tennis junior Matthew Lanahan earned BIG EAST Male Singles Player of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday afternoon.
Lanahan is the first Bluejays to earn BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week honors since Nick Campbell earned the honor back on Jan. 21, 2020. It is also the second BIG EAST weekly honor of his career as he teamed up with Casey Ross to earn the BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week on Feb. 23 last season.
The junior posted a 2-0 record at the No. 1 and No.2 singles slot last week, helping the Bluejays to a pair of 4-3 victories over Northern Illinois and two-time defending BIG EAST Champions, DePaul.
The Chula Vista, Calif., native opened the 2-0 week with a 6-4, 6-2 straight-sets win over Northern Illinois' Cheng En Tsai at the No. 1 singles spot on Friday afternoon. Lanahan then followed Friday's performance with an impressive 6-3, 6-3 straight-sets win over DePaul's Leon Huck on Saturday.
Lanahan has now won three straight singles matches, all in straight-sets, after starting the season 0-3 in singles play. Lanahan has also teamed up with Alejandro Gandini for a 3-3 overall record at the No. 1 doubles position.
The Creighton men's tennis team returns to action on Friday, Feb. 17 when the Bluejays host crosstown rival Omaha at the Hanscom Tennis Center. First serve between the Bluejays and Mavericks is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
