PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- No. 18 Creighton saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday night as the Bluejays fell 94-86 in double-overtime to No. 24 Providence at a sold out Amica Mutual Pavilion.
Creighton (17-9, 11-4 BIG EAST) had the ball at the end of regulation and the first overtime, but did Providence (19-7, 11-4 BIG EAST) got defensive stops both times
Creighton started quickly, making 6-of-9 shots to bolt to a 13-7 lead at the first media timeout. Arthur Kaluma had three baskets and Baylor Scheierman two others to propel CU to its early advantage.
Falling behind by four points on four different occasions, the Bluejays scored the final four points of the first half to take a 37-36 lead into the break. Trey Alexander made all four of his shots while Ryan Kalkbrenner battled foul trouble as both men had 11 points by intermission. PC was paced by 10 points from Devin Carter, all in the first seven minutes.
The second team saw two of the nation's best teams trading baskets for much of the first 15 minutes as the contest would eventually feature season-highs of 20 lead changes and 17 ties.
Carter made a reverse lay-up in transition to put PC up 69-67 with 5:22 remaining and a lay-up by Bryce Hopkins with just over four minutes left put the Friars up by four, but Ryan Nembhard collected back-to-back baskets to tie the game with 2:34 left. The Jays retook the lead with 1:23 to play on a nifty reverse lay-up by Nembhard. Following a timeout, PC would tie it on a lay-up by Hopkins with 1:01 to play.
After both teams missed shots, Creighton had a chance to win it for the final possession of regulation, calling a timeout with 8.1 seconds left in the frontcourt. Creighton fought through a pair of double-teams and Scheierman fed Arthur Kaluma for an alley-oop, but it rolled off the rim as time expired to send CU to overtime for the first time this season.
Providence scored the first four points of the overtime session and would not trail in either overtime session. CU's Scheierman would get fouled on a drive with 48.4 left and make both tie the score. Jared Bynum and Hopkins both had shots to put PC ahead in the final 20 seconds of OT but missed, only to have PC control both caroms. The Jays would eventually force a shot clock violation to retake possession with 9.5 seconds left. CU cleared out for Nembhard who drove to the basket but had his shot swatted away by Carter.
Carter opened the scoring in the second overtime stanza with at three-point play with 3:46 left and a basket by Locke gave PC its largest lead of the game (to that point) at 89-84 with 2:15 left. After PC kept the ball after a ball lodged in the rim, Hopkins made two free throws with 52.2 left to put PC up seven. The Jays would not score in the second overtime until Kaluma sank two free throws with 15.6 seconds left.
All five starters scored in double-figures for Creighton, who were led by 21 points and 10 rebounds by Nembhard.
Carter led PC with a career-high 25 points and Locke and Hopkins each added 20.
Creighton returns to the hardwood on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Central for a road game at St. John's. The game will be televised on FS1 and can be heard on 1620 The Zone and 101.9 The Keg.
