OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men's tennis team rolled to a 5-2 victory over Georgetown, picking up their fifth straight win, on Saturday night at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The Bluejays improved to 5-3 on the year and 2-0 in BIG EAST play with the win, while the Hoyas fell to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in league action.
Creighton grabbed an early 1-0 lead after capturing wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Kirtan Patel and Alejandro Gandini earned a 6-4 win on court 2 before Zachary Kuo and Oscar Alvarez battled for an identical 6-4 win on court 3.
In singles play, Gandini quickly took down Georgetown's Adhvyte Sharma in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-1 to give Creighton a 2-0 edge in the match. Georgetown responded with a pair of victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions to even thee match at 2-2.
The Bluejays would regain the lead moments later as Patel earned a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at the No. 6 spot over Georgetown's Derek Raskopf.
The final two matches went to three sets, with the Bluejays coming out on top in both. Junior Matthew Lanahan rallied for a three-set win after dropping the opening frame 7-6 (8-6). Lanahan answered with a 6-4 win in the second set before clinching the match for the Bluejays with a 6-2 win in the third set.
Junior Shin Inoue then closed out the match by picked up a 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 three-set win over Akria Morgenstern at the No. 5 singles position.
"We played some better doubles and were fortunate to get the doubles point tonight," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Our guys are really competing hard and playing for each other and it's fun to watch. We are on a great streak of winning these close matches and need to keep playing with all our effort to keep it going. It won't be easy leaving the Hanscom Tennis Center for outdoor courts soon, but I know these guys will enjoy the challenges ahead."
The Bluejays will return to the court on Saturday, March 4 as they travel to Cincinnati to battle Xavier in a BIG EAST conference match.
