UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- BIG EAST Player of the Year Maddy Siegrist had 37 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 11 Villanova to a 63-61 win over Creighton on Sunday in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament presented by JEEP.
The Wildcats (28-5) will play for a BIG EAST Tournament title on Monday against top-seeded and ninth-ranked Connecticut, which had little trouble in defeating Marquette 81-52 in the Sunday's first semifinal. Monday's title game will tip at 6 p.m. Central and be televised on FS1.
Villanova opened up a 59-51 lead with just over three minutes to play on a hoop by Siegrist before the Jays narrowed the gap to 59-56. Siegrist scored inside, only to have Lauren Jensen drain a three-pointer to bring CU within 61-59 with 1:30 to play. CU got a stop, only to turn it over on the ensuing possession.
Nova would miss with 30 seconds left but Siegrist grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 26.6 left and sank both free throws. The Jays had two shots at the offensive end before Villanova was called for an intentional foul in a scramble for a rebound with 11.2 seconds left after a replay review.
Jensen went to the line and drained both shots of the intentional foul. CU then kept possession of the ball and found Jensen, but the All-BIG EAST selection saw her pull-up jumper from the left block miss the mark and be corralled by Siegrist with four seconds left. Creighton still had multiple fouls to give and time expired before the it would gain another opportunity, sending Villanova to the finals.
The nation's leading scorer and all-time BIG EAST scoring champion, Siegrist made 14-of-21 shots from the floor. After scoring 20 of Villanova's 32 points in the first half, Siegrist scored 17 of Nova's 31 points after the break.
Jensen led Creighton with 22 points while Emma Ronsiek scored 15.
Creighton (22-8) will wait to hear its name called next Sunday when the NCAA Tournament field is announced.
