Bluejays enter BIG EAST Championship with momentum
ELKHORN, Neb. --Â The Creighton Women's Golf team will take momentum into next week's BIG EAST Championship following a victory at the Stampede at the Creek on Tuesday, April 11. Bluejay sophomore Katherine Lemke took home medalist honors for the third time in her career with a one-shot win to help lead the Bluejays to a two-shot triumph overall.
Lemke used birdies on 12, 13 and 14 to overtake teammate Eleanor Hudepohl and surge into the lead on the back nine. She fired rounds of 73, 72 and 74 to pick up her first victory since taking home medalist honors at last year's BIG EAST Championship. Lemke tied for the tournament lead with 11 birdies overall. The victory came one year after she finished runner-up in the same event as a freshman.
Hudepohl finished alone in third place following loops of 71, 75 and 76 for a 222 aggregate. It was the fifth top-five finish in nine tournaments this season for the sophomore from Cincinnati, Ohio.
Gabby Tremblay tied for 16th place overall after circuits of 78, 76 and 74 for a 228 total, just ahead of teammate Katie Allen's tie for 22nd place after loops of 73, 76 and 81. Allen tied for the tournament lead with 39 pars.
Rounding out the Bluejay team scoring were freshmen Annika Yturralde (79-75-78=232, T-25th) and Mia Gaboriau (76-73-84=233, T-31st).
Playing as individuals and not factoring into Creighton's team score were Claire Orcutt (76-82-80=238, T-38th) and Katie Berrian (81-76-82=239, T-42nd). Orcutt's second round 76 was her best score in two years and helped the senior end her career on a high note.
Creighton's opening round 293 ranked as its second-best team score of the past 20 seasons, surpassed only by a 292 in the third round of the Coeur d'Alene Resort Collegiate in September of 2021. The victory was also.Creighton's second of the season, joining the title from the Kelsey Chugg Invitational last September.
The tournament was played on the Par 72 Club at Indian Creek Golf Course, which measured 5,988 yards. Nine teams and 60 players competed on the Blackbird and Red Feather nine's. North Dakota State (302-287-303) finished as runner-up after leading by as much as six shots at one point during the third round. Catherine Monty (74-72-74=220) finished as runner-up, one shot behind Lemke.
Creighton tees it up next week at the BIG EAST Championship Presented by Jeep in Hardeeville, S.C , from April 17-19. Lemke won that event last year to become the program's first conference champion in history.
