Omaha Sports Commission Awards Show will be held May 25th
OMAHA, Neb. -- Six individuals and teams representing three sports affiliated with Creighton Athletics have been named as finalists for the 2023 Omaha Sports Commission Awards Show (The OSCAS). The nominees celebrate another great year of athletics in the metropolitan Omaha area.
The Bluejay volleyball program earned a pair of nominations. Outside hitter Norah Sis is a candidate for "Female Athlete of the Year", while Kirsten Bernthal Booth was put forward for "Female Coach of the Year". Sis was named BIG EAST Player of the Year and BIG EAST Tournament MVP, while Booth led Creighton to an 11th straight NCAA Tournament and ninth consecutive BIG EAST regular-season title. Both women were also nominated last season.
Men's Soccer standout Duncan McGuire was selected as a candidate for "Male Athlete of the Year" after helping Creighton to its first College Cup since 2012. Also named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, McGuire led the nation in goals, goals per game, points and points per game. McGuire was recognized with the MAC Hermann Trophy, given to the nation's top collegiate soccer player. He currently plays for the Orlando City SC in the MLS.
Johnny Torres is up for Male Coach of the Year after leading the Creighton men's soccer team to the College Cup and a 13-5-6 overall record. Creighton won its first BIG EAST Tournament title to open a stretch of five straight top-25 victories. The Jays led the nation in goals, assists, points and yellow cards.
In addition, the Creighton men's basketball team and men's soccer team are both up for "Men's Team of the Year". The men's soccer team reached the College Cup and won its first BIG EAST Tournament, while the men's basketball team reached the Elite Eight and tied a school-record with six wins over top-25 competition.

Lindsay Toussant Brown, president and executive director of the Omaha Sports Commission said the past year has been outstanding for high school and college sports in the metropolitan area and every nominee has the potential to win in his or her category.
"Narrowing the nominee list to five in each category was extremely challenging for our selection committee," Toussant Brown said. "Once again the public now has a chance to cast their votes for the top sports athletes, teams and events of the past year. The OSCAS voting will take place from April 17- 30 by going to our website at omahasports.org/OSCAS."
Toussant Brown said The OSCAS also will recognize Lisa Roskens as the Dr. Jack Lewis Sports Person of the Year, and we will celebrate the induction of the 2023 Omaha Sports Hall of Fame class of Curlee Alexander, Gina Mancuso, Tony Veland, the 1993 Omaha Racers Basketball Team and 1972-1978 Kansas City-Omaha Kings Basketball Teams.
Creighton has won six OSCAS in the first four years of the event. Jaali Winters (2019) and Jaylyn Agnew (2020) have been named Female Amateur Athlete of the Year, Greg McDermott (2020) and Jim Flanery (2022) have won Male Coach of the Year, and Men's Basketball (2020) and Women's Basketball (2022) have each been recognized as Team of the Year.
