Lemke ends sophomore season at NCAA Regionals
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Creighton sophomore women's golfer Katherine Lemke fired six birdies and shot a 1-under 71 on Wednesday in her third and final round of the NCAA Regionals in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The two-time BIG EAST champion, who was tied for 61st after round one and tied for 57th after 36 holes, catapulted up the leaderboard to finish her NCAA Regional tied for 48th place.
It marked the best round in NCAA Regional play in program history, seven shots better than Lemke's final round 78 last year at the Ann Arbor Regional. Lemke's tie for 48th place was also the best NCAA Regional finish by a Bluejay in program history.
The lone postseason qualifier in program history, Lemke teed off at 7:55 a.m. Central on the No. 10 hole for the second straight day. She drained an eight-foot putt on her first hole of the day, then shook off back-to-back bogeys when she collected birdies on the par-4 No. 13, No. 14 and No. 16 holes. She made the turn at 1-under, then picked up her fifth birdie of the round on yet another par 4, the 10th. Her sixth and final birdie came on No. 6, her 15th hole of the day, to return her to 2-under. She would par her final hole to finish with a 1-under 71.
For the round, Lemke had six birdies, five bogeys and seven pars. She was one of four players in the field with six or more birdies on Wednesday (joining Duke's Andie Smith, Norhwestern's Irene Kim and Duke's Phoebe Brinker), and one of five players to birdie both No. 1 and No. 10 on Wednesday (joining Duke's Andie Smith, USF's Leonor Medeiros, Princeton's Yanjun Liu and Quinnipiac's Aimee Uchida).
Lemke earned her spot in the NCAA Regionals on April 19th when she won the BIG EAST Championship at Riverton Pointe Golf and Country Club in Hardeeville, S.C. It made Lemke the first player in league history to win back-to-back women's golf championships, and also made her the nation's only Division I women's player to win medalist honors at a league meet each of the past two seasons. She remains Creighton's only individual league champion in any sport since joining the BIG EAST 10 years ago.
Lemke played 36 rounds during her sophomore season, with five of those of par or better. Those five rounds of par or better tied a school record set by teammate Eleanor Hudepohl in 2022-23, while her nine career such circuits are an outright record. Lemke's 75.39 scoring average is the second-best figure by a Bluejay since at least 2003-04 and helped her to six top-five finishes in 12 events. Prior to earning medalist honors at the BIG EAST Championship, she had won the Stampede at the Creek title on April 11. Entering NCAA Regionals, GolfStat ranked Lemke as the seventh-best golfer in the BIG EAST Conference.
