10 of team's 11 non-conference matches are against postseason teams
OMAHA, Neb. – The nine-time defending BIG EAST champion Creighton Volleyball program has announced its fall 2023 schedule. Coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth's team will play 11 regular-season home matches and also participate in tournaments at Purdue, Omaha and Minnesota during yet another challenging slate.
Nine of Creighton's 11 non-conference opponents owned 20 or more wins last season, combining to go 240-112 (.682). All 11 of the foes owned a top-85 RPI, 10 appeared in the postseason and four won a conference title last season.
The season begins in mid-August with the annual Blue/White Scrimmage exhibition on Aug. 12, followed a week later with an exhibition match against defending Big Sky Conference champion Northern Colorado on Aug. 19.
Booth's 21st season on the Bluejay sideline opens on Aug. 25th against defending Atlantic 10 member Loyola (Chicago) at the Reamer Club Xtra Special Premier in West Lafayette, Ind. CU meets perennial power and tournament host Purdue a day later before closing the event with a match against Duke.
Creighton opens September with the Bluejay Invitational, which has been changed to three days of two matches each. CU begins its regular-season home schedule on Sept. 1 against Ball State before meeting LSU on Sept. 2nd. The Bluejay Invitational closes on Sept. 3 when Creighton hosts longtime rival UNI. All three teams made the NCAA Tournament last season, with Ball State and UNI winning conference titles.
One year after setting a record for the largest volleyball-only crowd in NCAA regular-season history, Creighton visits Nebraska on Sept. 6th in its lone midweek match of the fall. The Huskers appeared in the Sweet 16 for the 28th time in29 seasons and led the nation in average home attendance.
The Bluejays will then play at Baxter Arena for the second straight season when it plays at Omaha (Sept. 8) and meets up with regional rival Iowa State (Sept. 10) at the Omaha Invite. Both teams won 20 matches last fall.
Creighton wraps up non-conference play on Sept. 15-16 at the Diet Coke Classic in Minneapolis. The Bluejays face off against former assistant coach Ryan Meek's High Point team before taking on powerhouse Minnesota. High Point won the Big South regular-season and Tournament titles last fall en route to a 23-10 finish, while the Gophers closed 22-9 and reached the Sweet 16.
Creighton's quest for a 10th straight BIG EAST regular-season title opens on Sept. 22 with a road trip to Butler that continues the next day at Xavier before CU returns home for matches against St. John's (Sept. 29) and Seton Hall (Oct. 1).
Creighton squares off against BIG EAST Tournament runner-up Marquette on Oct. 6, then travels to DePaul a day later. The Golden Eagles handed CU its lone league loss last fall and shared the BIG EAST regular-season title with the Jays.
The Bluejays hit the halfway point of league play on Oct. 20-21 with a road trip to take on Connecticut and Providence, who once again will not play in Omaha during the regular-season. It's part of an unbalanced league schedule that this year includes 10 road matches and eight home matches in conference play.
Creighton hosts its rematch against Marquette on Nov. 5 and finishes up the regular-season on Nov. 19 with a home match vs. Butler.
Marquette will host this year's BIG EAST Championship Presented by Jeep from Nov. 22-25, which once again will include six teams and see the top two teams receive a bye into the semifinals.
Creighton then seeks its 12th straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, which starts on Nov. 30th at 16 campus sites nationwide.
Season tickets include tickets to all home matches and can be purchased online now at GoCreighton.com/VB2023 or in-person at the Creighton Ticket Office. Single-match tickets will go on sale at a later date.
