Nov. 14 meeting will be first between Bluejays and Hawkeyes since 2011
NEW YORK – The BIG EAST and Big Ten Conferences have announced the matchups for the eighth Gavitt Tipoff Games, with eight men's basketball contests set for Nov. 13-17, 2023. Creighton will host Iowa on Nov. 14, 2023 in the first meeting between the schools since 2011, and first tangle in Omaha since 1999.
The contest will be nationally televised on FS1, with game times will be announced at a later date.
The Gavitt Tipoff Games is a unique early-season series played between the two conferences and named in honor of Hall of Famer Dave Gavitt, founder of the BIG EAST and basketball visionary. The annual series, which is played on school home courts, features games between some area opponents as well as some attractive intersectional matchups.
The Gavitt Tipoff Games are played on consecutive days early in the college basketball season. Each BIG EAST team will participate a minimum of six times, while Big Ten programs will take part a minimum of four times. The Gavitt Tipoff Games schedule begins on Monday, Nov. 13, with Xavier traveling to Purdue and Michigan meeting St. John's at Madison Square Garden. On Tuesday, Nov. 14, a tripleheader includes Wisconsin at Providence, Marquette at Illinois and Iowa at Creighton. One contest is slated for Wednesday, Nov. 15. Georgetown plays at Rutgers. Gavitt Tipoff Games play concludes on Friday, Nov. 17, when Maryland visits Villanova and Butler plays at Michigan State.
This year marks the eighth edition of the Gavitt Tipoff Games. Creighton has participated six times previously, going 3-3 in the event while facing three ranked teams. In 2015 the Bluejays lost at No. 14 Indiana, 86-65. In 2016, Creighton beat No. 9 Wisconsin, 79-67, in Omaha. In 2017 Creighton picked up a 92-88 win at No. 20 Northwestern. Creighton dropped a 69-60 decision to Ohio State in Omaha in 2018 and fell at Michigan 79-69 in 2019. After the 2020 event was cancelled due to COVID, the Bluejays returned to the win column with a 77-69 win at Nebraska in 2021. CU did not participate in the event last season. Creighton's three victories in the event trail only St. John's, DePaul and Indiana's four triumphs.
Iowa leads the all-time series against Creighton by a 14-11 margin, but Creighton is 5-2 all-time in Omaha against the Hawkeyes. The Bluejays have won five of the past seven meetings at all sites over Iowa, though the teams have not met since CU's 82-59 victory in Des Moines on Nov. 20, 2011.
Creighton has reached the NCAA Tournament each of the last five seasons it has played the Hawkeyes. Creighton head coach Greg McDermott is 6- 4 all-time against Iowa, and 1-0 against Fran McCaffrey. Both McDermott and McCaffrey enter their 14th season at their respective schools this winter.
