Bluejays add two high school teammates of Mason Miller
OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men's basketball team added a pair of players from the Memphis area to its 2023-24 roster on Thursday, May 4, with Johnathan Lawson and Brock Vice joining the Bluejay program.
Lawson and Vice both played on the same team with rising Bluejay sophomore Mason Miller at Houston High School in the Memphis suburb of Germantown, Tenn., when the Mustangs won the 2021 Tennessee Class AAA state title. That team was coached by longtime NBA veteran Mike Miller, the brother of Bluejay assistant coach Ryan Miller.
Lawson will have three years of eligibility remaining, while Vice has four.
JOHNATHAN LAWSON
A 6-foot-6 guard, Johnathan Lawson has spent the past two seasons at the University of Memphis, where he played for former NBA All-Star Penny Hardaway.
Lawson redshirted during the 2021-22 campaign before coming off the bench in 29 games for Memphis last season. He averaged 3.4 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 15.7 minutes per game for the Tigers, who went 26-9 and reached the NCAA Tournament. He also made 19-of-46 three-pointers, good for 41.3 percent marksmanship. Lawson was part of the nation's No. 1 recruiting class at Memphis in 2021.
Lawson was a four-star recruit by both ESPN and Rivals and ranked as the 63rd-best player nationally by ESPN as a senior, when he became the first player in TSSAA history to win state championships at three different high schools. He was named the 2020 Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year in 2020 and Class AA Mr. Basketball at Wooddale High School.
"We couldn't be more excited to add Johnathan Lawson to our team," said Creighton head coach Greg McDermott. "JLaw will bring experience and basketball acumen to our backcourt. He is the ultimate competitor, a state champion, and will bring playmaking and shooting to our roster. He is from a basketball tradition rich family in Memphis and is the youngest of four Lawson kids who all had great college success."
BROCK VICE
Vice is a 6-foot-10 center who was a finalist for Tennessee Mr. Basketball honors during his senior year in high school. He's ranked as the nation's No. 32 best center prospect by 247Sports and the No. 3 overall player in the state of Tennessee.
Last season Vice averaged 17.5 points and 14.0 rebounds per game while earning all-District and all-Region accolades. Vice averaged 19.1 points and 10.0 rebounds per game as a junior in high school.
Vice was also an All-Region 8-6A wide receiver on Houston's football team, leading the team in receptions and touchdowns.
"Brock is a young man that we have had our eye on the past few years in the circuit," said McDermott. "He will add some depth and skill to our frontcourt with his size and ability to shoot the ball."
Lawson and Vice join Bellevue (Neb.) West High School guard Josiah Dotzler, University of Virginia transfer Isaac Traudt, Utah State University transfer Steven Ashworth and Red Rock (Nev.) Academy wing Sterling Knox as newcomers who have signed to join the Bluejay program for 2023-24.
Creighton finished the 2022-23 season in the Elite Eight with a 24-13 overall record.
