Bluejays win 4-of-5 sets over defending Big Sky champions
OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 18 Creighton Volleyball team closed out its exhibition season with a 4-1 victory over Northern Colorado on Saturday afternoon inside D.J. Sokol Arena. UNC won the first set 25-23 before Creighton won the final four frames, 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 and 15-10.
The teams had determined prior to the match that they'd play five sets to allow for maximum preparation for the start of the regular-season.
More than a combined 30 players saw action in the exhibition as both coaches tinkered with their lineups throughout in an attempt to find winning combinations, as well as giving experience to the talented newcomers joining each program.
Creighton has won nine straight BIG EAST regular-season titles, while Northern Colorado has won back-to-back Big Sky Conference crowns and has 14 returners favored to win a third consecutive championship this fall.
Creighton opens the regular-season on Friday in West Lafayette, Ind., when it takes on reigning Atlantic 10 Conference champion Loyola (Chicago), followed by matches against No. 16 Purdue and ACC power Duke later in the weekend. The Bears host No. 3 Stanford and No. 10 Kentucky to open the season.
