Omaha, Neb. -- Bluejay Men's Soccer sent the seventh largest crowd in program history (5,595) home happy as Creighton bested No. 13 Marquette 2-1 on Friday, September 15.
The victory pushed the Bluejays to 2-3-2 on the season and 1-0-0 in BIG EAST action, while Marquette fell to 6-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.
Junior Landon Sloan (Raleigh, N.C.) put the Bluejays in front in the 20th minute with his first goal as a Bluejay. Sloan took possession of a failed clear attempt by the Golden Eagles just outside the box and blasted in his first career goal with a shot from 24 yards away at the 19:57 mark.
Creighton struck once more in short order as a long pass from freshman Andrija Savic (Belgrade, Serbia) found fellow freshman Miguel Arilla (Castellon, Spain) along the right side of the pitch. Arilla's cross into the center was sent into the back of the net by Bluejay graduate student Alfie Pope (London, England) for his fourth goal of the season with 23:17 showing on the clock.
The Bluejays held their 2-0 advantage into the second half, when Marquette got on the scoreboard in the 59th minute (58:59). The Golden Eagles tally came on an excellent strike from Kyle Bebej from 28 yards. Bebej collected control after Diegoarmando Alvarado's pass into the box was headed out by Pope.
Creighton out shot Marquette 14-6 in the match, while sophomore goalkeeper Blake Gillingham earned his first win with five saves. The Santa Clara transfer got his first appearance as a Bluejay on Friday night, earning the start and playing the entire match.
The Bluejays returns to the pitch on Tuesday, September 19 in the Bluejays final non-conference road match of the season at Tulsa. The contest is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
