9/2/2023 7:32:00 PM | Volleyball
OMAHA, Neb. -- Norah Sis had 14 kills and tied a program record for fewest matches to 1,000 career kills as No. 20 Creighton Volleyball used a huge third set comeback to sweep LSU on Saturday at the Bluejay Invitational. The 25-12, 25-21, 32-30 victory improves Creighton to 4-1 and sets up a title match on Sunday against Northern Iowa at 2:30 p.m.
The Bluejays never trailed in the first two sets and rallied from an 18-10 deficit in the third to secure its second sweep of the young season. Back-up setter Audrey Clark jump-started the rally with a three-point run, then stayed in and dished five assists before checking out with the Jays down 22-18. CU staved off set point chances for LSU (1-3) at 24-23 and 29-28 and squandered match point opportunities of its own at 26-25, 27-26, 28-27 and 30-29 before consecutive kills from Kiana Schmitt and Ava Martin closed out the victory. LSU challenged match point, but the original call was confirmed as the Bluejays celebrated in front of their partisan crowd of 2,094.
Creighton (4-1) played its best volleyball of the young season in a 25-12 victory in the first set. After the teams traded service errors to open the contest, Ellie Bolton served a 6-0 run that included three kills by Martin. CU's margin reached double-digits at 17-7 and Sis' fourth kill secured the 25-12 victory. Creighton had 16 kills in the first set, including five from Martin and four each by Sis and Destiny Ndam-Simpson while hitting .483 as a team.
CU raced to a 6-1 lead in the second set, again fueled by Bolton's serve and three straight kills by Martin. The Tigers drew within one point at 16-15 and 17-16 before Ann Marie Remmes compiled a 4-0 serving run. The Jays took a 2--0 lead into intermission following Martin's fifth kill of the set. The Bluejay defense had 19 digs and held LSU to .095 hitting as Bolton dug six balls.
The third set featuring CU's large comeback included six kills each by Sis, Martin, Remmes and Schmitt as Creighton had 26 kills as a team on .373 hitting. Sis, who entered the match needing 12 kills to reach 1,000 in her career, notched her 12th kill of the day to bring CU within 23-19 in the third frame. It came in her 70th career match, tying Creighton Athletics Hall of Famer Melissa Walsh (1998-01) for fastest to that milestone in program history. The final set featured 12 ties and five lead changes.
Martin led CU with 16 kills on .364 hitting while Sis owned 14 kills on .385 hitting. Kendra Wait collected 42 assists and Bolton a dozen digs while Schmitt had a match-leading five blocks. Creighton had 57 kills, two aces, 52 digs and 7.0 blocks on .381 hitting.
LSU was paced by 12 kills from freshman Jurnee Robinson, while libero Erin Carmichael owned nine digs. The Tigers finished the day with 36 kills, six aces, 35 digs and 6.0 blocks on .171 hitting.
Play at the Bluejay Invitational concludes on Sunday. Ball State, which was swept by Northern Iowa in Saturday's lid-lifter, meets LSU at Noon as each team seeks to avoid an 0-3 weekend. Creighton and LSU, both 2-0 in the tournament, will play for the Bluejay Invitational title at 2:30 p.m.
