
Four Greats To Be Inducted Into Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame

OMAHA, Neb. — Four greats highlight the 2023 class for the Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame, McCormick Endowed Athletic Director Marcus Blossom announced on Thursday, September 21st. Fabian Herbers, Marissa (Janning) Murphy, Christina Lunceford and Dave Schrage comprise the 55th Hall of Fame class in school history, and matches the largest induction group of individuals ever.
The group will give the Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame 98 inductees, plus the 1991 Creighton Baseball Team. The Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame started in 1968 with the induction of Bluejay great Bob Gibson.
Fabian Herbers, Men's Soccer, 2013-15
Two-time BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-American Fabian Herbers scored 28 goals and dished 29 assists while leading Creighton to the NCAA Tournament in 2013, 2014 and 2015. His third and final season saw Herbers lead the nation with 47 points and a school-record 17 assists while ranking second nationally with 15 goals as Creighton won its first 15 games en route to spending eight weeks ranked No. 1 nationally. Though he turned pro after his junior year, Herbers ranks sixth in CU career history in assists (29), ninth in points (85) and 12th in goals (28). The Business major won the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award and BIG EAST Institutional Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, in addition to being a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American in the classroom. The Ahaus, Germany native was a runner-up for the MAC Hermann Trophy, given to the nation's best player. The sixth overall pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, Herbers owns 16 goals and 16 assists while playing eight seasons in MLS with the Philadelphia Union and Chicago Fire franchises.
Marissa Murphy, Women's Basketball, 2012-17
Marissa (Janning) Murphy is responsible for a number of firsts in the storied history of Creighton women's basketball. The Watertown, Minn., native and 2013 MVC Freshman of the Year became the program's first Freshman All-American (2013), first WBCA All-American (2014) first BIG EAST Player of the Year (2014) and recipient of the first BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award (2015). She was a three-time First Team All-Conference choice for the Bluejays, when she scored 1,934 points (4th in CU history), dished out 507 assists (2nd) and made 267 three-pointers (3rd) while establishing program records with 136 games played and 4,401 minutes played. Murphy arrived at Creighton after earning six varsity letters in basketball at Watertown-Mayer High School, where she scored 3,587 points and was named Minnesota Miss Basketball in 2012. Still a competitive athlete, Murphy completed the Boston Marathon in under four hours earlier this year. Now a resident of Oklahoma, she married former Bluejay baseball player Brennan Murphy in 2020.
Christina Lunceford, Softball, 1994-97
Christina Lunceford starred as a member of the Creighton Softball program from 1994-97, becoming the first female student-athlete in Creighton history to be named a College Sports Communicators (CoSIDA/GTE) First Team Academic All-American in 1997. One of Creighton's greatest hitters, Lunceford closed her career as the Bluejays' all-time hits leader with 245 base knocks, including a single-season program record 76 hits as a senior. A three-time First Team All-MVC outfielder, Lunceford also owns the school record for career doubles with 51, a total that ranked atop the career totals in the MVC at the time. Lunceford ranks third in school history with a .379 career batting average while continuing to rank in Creighton's career top-10 in total bases (fourth, 349), runs (sixth, 122), triples (seventh, 10), RBI (ninth, 110), at-bats (ninth, 646) and stolen bases (10th, 32). A three-time First Team All-Midwest Region and Academic All-MVC honoree, Lunceford is one of only three Bluejays in program history to hit better than .400 in two seasons, including a career-high .419 as a junior. During her junior season (1996), she earned all-conference honors after leading the Bluejays in six offensive categories, including batting average (.419), on-base percentage (.490), doubles (13), hits (52) and tied for the team lead in home runs (3) and runs scored (27), while her 23 runs batted in ranked second.
Dave Schrage, Baseball, 1980-83; Assistant Coach 1985-86
Dave Schrage was a standout outfielder for Creighton from 1980-83, then started a 38-year coaching career that saw him win more than 800 games before retiring in 2022. He hit .358 in his Bluejay career (eighth in CU history), leading the Missouri Valley Conference in 1982 when he hit .400. He closed his career by hitting at a .433 clip, which ranks fourth in CU's single-season record book, when he earned Second Team Academic All-America honors. That makes Schrage one of two men to hit .400 in multiple seasons, joining 1991 National Player of the Year Scott Stahoviak. Schrage also swiped 62 bases, a figure that remains tied for fifth-best in program history. In 2007 Schrage landed a spot as one of nine outfielders on the MVC's All-Centennial Team. He started his coaching career in 1984, then returned to Creighton as an assistant coach in 1985 and 1986. The Oak Park, Ill., native became a head coach for the first time in 1988 at Waldorf (Iowa) Junior College, where in 2008 he was inducted into their Hall of Fame. Schrage won 803 games while serving as head coach at six Division I schools, Northern Iowa (1991-99), Northern Illinois (2000-02), Evansville (2003-06), Notre Dame (2006-10), South Dakota State (2011-16) and Butler (2016-22). He ranks 11th in MVC history with 125 league wins and is one of six men to be a three-time MVC Coach of the Year (1995, 1997, 2006). When he won his initial honor, he became the first baseball player in league history to be named Coach of the Year after being named All-Valley as a player, something done by only two men since.
