DES MOINES, Iowa – Despite a pair of goals from senior Azumi Manriki and freshman Savanna Solomon, the Creighton women's soccer team settled for a 2-2 draw with Drake on Sunday morning at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
With the tie the Bluejays moved to 0-2-3 on the season, while Drake moves to 3-1-1 overall.
Creighton placed the first dent on the scoreboard, taking an early 1-0 lead in the 20th minute (19:26) after taking advantage of a Drake miscue. Manriki intercepted a slowly played pass by Bulldog goalkeeper Kelti Wise and lofted a shot over the top from 35-yards out and into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Fifteen minutes later Drake leveled the match at 1-1 with a header from freshman Angela Gutierrez off a free kick insertion from fellow classmate Zoey Mahoney.
With the score tied at the break, the Bluejays came out of the locker room with extra aggression and regained the lead in the 66th minute (65:03). Freshman Savanna Solomon converted the go-ahead goal with a header from just outside the six-yard box on a cross into the box from senior Gabby Grimaldi. The goal by Solomon was the first goal of her Bluejay career.
Exactly 50 second later Drake drew a foul in the box and Emma Nagel converted the penalty kick to even the score at 2-2.
Creighton ended the match with an 10-8 edge in shots and a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Fifth-year senior Keelan Terrell collected one save while the Bluejays also recorded one team save.
The Bluejays return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 8 for a contest against Minnesota. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. during the Bluejays annual Socctoberfest at Morrison Stadium.
