#16 Volleyball Falls in Four Sets at #4 Nebraska

Creighton hands Huskers first set loss of season
LINCOLN, Neb. – Playing without two-time AVCA All-American Norah Sis and in front of Bob Devaney Sports Center record crowd of 8,656, the No. 16 Creighton Volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision at No. 4 Nebraska on Wednesday night in Lincoln. After the match Creighton coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth said the reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year missed the match with an ab strain and was uncertain how long she'd be out.
Scores of the match in favor of the Cornhuskers were 25-9, 25-13, 23-25, 25-20. Nebraska's 25-23 set three loss was the first set the Cornhuskers had dropped all season.
Freshman Destiny Ndam-Simpson made her first collegiate start and paced the Bluejays with 13 kills, while junior setter Kendra Wait dished out 32 assists and recorded eight digs on .714 hitting. Creighton finished the night with 42 kills, two aces, 41 digs and three blocks on .109 hitting. to become the first team to surpass the .100 mark this season against NU.
Nebraska (6-0) was paced by 17 kills from Merritt Beason and 12 kills on .478 hitting from Lindsay Krause. Freshman Harper Murray chipped in 10 kills and hit .280 on 25 swings and freshman setter Bergan Reilly finished with 42 assists, 11 digs and two blocks. Nebraska had 52 kills, six aces, 47 digs and 10 blocks on .305 hitting.
Nebraska hit .339 with 23 kills on 56 attack attempts to take control of the match in the first and second sets. Bekka Allick, Beason and Krause guided the Cornhuskers to 25-9 and 25-13 set wins with five kills apiece over the two frames to take a 2-0 lead into intermission. The Bluejays made an uncharacteristic 13 attack errors in the opening set, then managed just 15 more the rest of the evening after adjusting to their new lineup and the enthusiastic crowd.
The third set featured seven ties and three lead changes as Creighton earned a 25-23 set win. Down 10-7 early, the Bluejays chipped away and leveled the score at 14-14 on a service ace from senior Ellie Bolton, then took the lead on the ensuing point on a kill from sophomore Ann Marie Remmes. Creighton's lead grew to 21-17 on a kill by Ndam-Simpson and an attack error by Beason, before Nebraska closed to one at 23-22, on back-to-back kills by Krause. The Bluejays recovered after a timeout and ended the set with kills by Wait and sophomore Ava Martin.
Creighton, however, could not keep the momentum in the fourth set, never leading in the 25-20 setback. Nebraska raced out to an 4-1 lead on an attack error before Creighton clawed back and evened the score at 8-8 with a kill by Martin and an error by NU's Andi Jackson. The Cornhuskers regrouped and pushed their advantage out to 15-10 on kill by Murray and didn't look back. Nebraska's lead grew to as much as 23-16 before closing the match with the seventh kill of the match from Allick.
Creighton returns to the court on Friday when it visits Omaha in the MH Hospitality Omaha Challenge inside Baxter Arena in a 7 p.m. match that will air on Nebraska Public Media.
