Senior guard ranks in the BIG EAST's top 10 in points, rebounds and assists per agme
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton senior guard Baylor Scheierman has landed a spot on the Midseason Top 25 today for the John R. Wooden® Award presented by Principal®. Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts, the list is comprised of 25 student-athletes who are the early front-runners for college basketball's most prestigious individual honor.
The list was unveiled earlier tonight on ESPN2 and ESPN.com.
A senior guard from Aurora, Neb., Scheierman leads Creighton with 18.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game while ranking second on the team with 65 assists and 14 steals. He has scored nine points or more in every game and made three or more three-pointers in 12-of-16 contests to date. Scheierman was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Dec. 4 after helping Creighton to double-digit road wins at Oklahoma State and at Nebraska. Scheierman leads the BIG EAST in defensive rebounds and three-pointers per game while also ranking in the top 10 in points per game (2nd), rebounds per game (4th), minutes per game (4th), free throw percentage (5th), assists per game (9th) and assist/turnover ratio (10th).
This year marks the seventh time in the past 13 seasons that Creighton is represented on the Wooden Award Midseason 25 list. Creighton's Doug McDermott won the Wooden Award following the 2013-14 season after also being a finalist in both 2011-12 and 2012-13. Maurice Watson Jr. was on the list of 25 in 2016-17 and Marcus Foster was among those listed a year later, as was Marcus Zegarowski in 2020-21. None of those three most recent men advanced to the final cut.
On the 2024 Wooden Award™ Midseason Top 25, eight players make their debut on the Wooden Watch™: David Jones (Memphis), Dalton Knecht (Tennessee), Jaedon LeDee (San Diego State), Caleb Love (Arizona), Antonio Reeves (Kentucky), Mark Sears (Alabama), Reed Sheppard (Kentucky), and KJ Simpson (Colorado). Three schools have two players on the list: Kansas (Hunter Dickinson and Kevin McCullar Jr.), Kentucky (Reeves and Sheppard), and North Carolina (Armando Bacot and RJ Davis).
The Big 12 & SEC lead all conferences with five selections each on the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25, followed by the ACC with four, the Big East with three, and the American, Big Ten, Mountain West and Pac-12 with two selections apiece.
The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2024 John R. Wooden Award Men's Player of the Year presented by Principal. Players not chosen to the preseason or midseason list are still eligible for the Wooden Award™ National Ballot. The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award. Nearly 1,000 voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games. The Wooden Award All American Team™ will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2024 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Principal following the NCAA Tournament in April.
Scheierman and teammate Ryan Kalkbrenner were also named to the Lute Olson Award Midseason Watch List on Wednesday.
Ranked 22nd nationally, Creighton returns to action on Saturday at Noon when it hosts St. John's in a game that will be nationally televised by FOX.
