Kentucky transfer will have one year of eligibility left
OMAHA, Neb. – Elise Goetzinger, who started in Kentucky's national championship victory in Omaha in the spring of 2021, is transferring to play volleyball at Creighton. The 6-foot-4 middle blocker from Blue Mounds, Wis., will enroll at Creighton this spring and compete in her final year of eligibility in a Bluejay uniform.
Goetzinger (GETS-ing-er) averaged 2.58 kills and 0.74 blocks per set while hitting .295 at Kentucky this past season, helping the Wildcats to a seventh straight Southeastern Conference title.
"We are excited to add Elise to our team this spring," said Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "We have played against Elise several times while she's been at Kentucky so we know what a great player she is. We are looking forward to having her on our side of the net!"
Goetzinger played in 91 career matches at UK, collecting 579 kills, 231 blocks, 65 digs and 18 aces in 278 sets. She hit .326, which ranks sixth-best in program history in the 25-point scoring era. Goetzinger started eight of the 10 NCAA Tournament matches she appeared in during her career with the Wildcats.
Goetzinger averaged 1.40 kills per set and was second on the Wildcat team with 1.17 blocks per set during Kentucky's national championship campaign in 2020-21. She started all five of UK's NCAA Tournament matches en route to the title and finished the 3-1 title match victory vs. Texas with three blocks and three kills in five swings.
She's also no stranger to the Creighton staff. Goetzinger had six kills and two blocks on .400 hitting in 2021 against the Jays in Lexington, then had seven kills and a career-high eight blocks a year later inside D.J. Sokol Arena in a 3-1 win over CU. In fact, Goetzinger was named to the Bluejay Invitational All-Tournament Team following her play in Omaha, which included 11 kills on .786 hitting in a win over No. 25 USC. Goetzinger was also a club teammate of Bluejay middle blocker Kiara Reinhardt.
"She and Kiara were club teammates, and she loved playing with her," noted Booth. "We are looking forward to getting in the gym with her."
Goetzinger is the second high-profile transfer to choose Creighton in the last two weeks, joining Penn State defensive specialist Maddy Bilinovic.
Creighton finished the 2023 season with a 29-5 record, reaching the program's third Sweet 16 since 2015 in addition to earning a 10th straight BIG EAST regular-season title.
