Creighton Opens Second Stanza with 26-6 Run to Seize Control
OMAHA, NEB. -- Playing with specific passion in its 14th Annual Creighton vs. Cancer Pink Out Game, No. 17 Creighton Men's Basketball delighted the ninth-largest home crowd (18, 571) in school history with an 85-62 win over DePaul on Saturday, January 27.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 16-5 on the season and 7-3 in BIG EAST action, while DePaul fell to 3-17 overall and 0-9 against conference foes. Creighton has now beaten DePaul in 20 straight meetings, extending its longest spell over another opponent in program history.
The first half saw the trio of Trey Alexander, Ryan Kalkbrenner and Baylor Scheierman combine for 30 of the Bluejays 40 points, but DePaul remained in striking distance throughout behind nine from Jalen Terry and eight from Elijah Fisher. Both squads hit 14 field goals in the first half with DePaul going 14-of-31 (45.2%) and Creighton hitting 14-of-32 (43.8%).
After the opening frame, DePaul pulled within a point at 40-39 with the opening bucket of the second half (19:48). Over the next eight minutes the Bluejays picked the Blue Demons apart with a 26-4 run to soar to a 66-43 advantage (11:25).
Alexander got things rolling for Creighton with six straight points on a three-pointer and a traditional three-point play. Following a DePaul bucket, Steven Ashworth went to work from long range as he surrounded a mid-range shot by Alexander with a pair of treys to make it 54-41 (15:59). Despite a second bucket from the Blue Demons, Creighton's run continued as Kalkbrenner and Scheierman got involved in the next 12-0 run to give the Jays a 66-43 edge.
Alexander led all scorers with 23 points, while Kalkbrenner finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Rounding out the Bluejays in double digits was a season-high 17 points from Ashworth as well as 16 points and 10 rebounds from Scheierman for his seventh double-double of 2023-24. Creighton won the rebound battle 41-30 and made 12 three-pointers in addition to 11-of-12 free throws.
DePaul's Fisher was the only Blue Demon in double figures with 12 points. Interim head coach Matt Brady's club shot 37.7 percent from the floor and made just 3-of-13 three-pointers.
The Bluejays remain at home for their next contest, facing Butler on Friday, February 2 at 8:00 p.m. inside CHI Health Center Omaha. The contest will be broadcast on FS1.
