Huskies never trail en route to seventh straight win
Omaha, Neb. -- The No. 21 Creighton women's basketball team suffered its first BIG EAST home loss, falling to No. 12 UConn 94-50 in front of the largest women's basketball crowd (2,374) in D.J. Sokol Arena history.
UConn improved to 11-3 (3-0 BIG EAST) with the win, while Creighton dropped to 10-3 (1-2 BIG EAST) with the defeat. Both of CU's league losses have come against Top 25 competition.
Connecticut raced to a 27-14 lead after one quarter, shooting 78.6 percent (11-140 in the opening stanza. Aaliyah Edwards (9) and KK Arnold (7) combined for 16 points to lead the Huskies attack, which included a 16-4 advantage in the paint.
The Huskies extended their advantage to 53-29 by halftime as All-American Paige Bueckers caught fire with 12 points on 4-for-4 shooting from the field. UConn made five straight shots during a 14-0 run that saw the lead grow to 49-21 at one point. Lauren Jensen led CU with 10 points in the opening 20 minutes, while Bueckers (16) and Arnold (11) paced the visitors.
UConn's lead remained at 23 points or more in the third quarter, with a five-point flurry in the final six seconds helping the Huskies to a 74-44 lead after three quarters. The Bluejays were harassed into 2-for-10 shooting from the floor, relying on 10-for-13 marksmanship at the line.
The Huskies eliminated any chance of a historic Bluejay comeback with a 14-2 run to open the fourth quarter.
Bueckers led all players with 24 points, adding seven assists. Arnold added 17 points while Ashlynn Shade (18) and Edwards (16 points, 11 rebounds) also scored in double-figures. The Huskies shot 53.3 percent from the field and drained 9-of-19 three-pointers, including 4-of-5 shooting from Bueckers.
Creighton was led by 13 points from Emma Ronsiek and Jensen finished with a dozen. The Bluejays shot a season-low 25 percent from the field (14-56) and made just 4-of-24 shots (16.7 percent) from long-range.
Creighton returns to the court on Saturday at 3 p.m. when it visits DePaul in a game that will air on FS1.
