Omaha, Neb. -- Despite out shooting their opponent 23-4 and holding a 14-0 edge on corners, Creighton Men's Soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to DePaul on Friday, October 4.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 4-4-3 on the season and 0-2-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Blue Demons climbed to 4-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play.
The Blue Demon goal came on a costly mistake in the 10th minute (9:46) as Noeh Hernandez intercepted a pass just outside the Creighton box. The DePaul forward beat another Bluejay defender for a one-on-one shot against Creighton goalkeeper Blake Gillingham. The Bluejay netminder got a hand on Hernandez's shot, but was unable to maintain a clean sheet.
DePaul did not take its second shot until the 66th minute, closing the contest with four shots overall.
Creighton's offense created chance after chance in both halves, firing off eight shots in the first half and 15 in the second period. In spite of the volume of attack DePaul goalkeeper Santigago Davila posted a goose egg with seven saves. The Blue Demons also collected a team save when the match was still 1-0.
In the closing moments of the match DePaul tacked on an insurance goal by beating the Bluejays on a counter attack, then getting some creative moves from Logan Finnegan to deliver an unassisted goal.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Wednesday, October 9 as the Bluejays face Omaha in a crosstown matchup with the Mavericks at Caniglia Field. The contest is set for a 7:00 p.m. start.
