Ava Martin serves eight of Creighton's record 15 aces
OMAHA, Neb. -- Ava Martin served eight of Creighton Volleyball's 15 service aces as the Bluejays swept Seton Hall on Friday night at D.J. Sokol Arena. Martin tied the Creighton's single-match record set by Carolyn Decker in 2004, while the team's 15 aces tied a program record done twice in 1995.
Scores of the match were 25-12, 25-16, 25-10 in favor of Creighton (24-2, 15-0 BIG EAST), who has now won 56 straight sets over Seton Hall (11-15, 5-10 BIG EAST).
Creighton never trailed in either of the first two sets. The Bluejays raced to a 10-3 lead in the opener and were up 23-11 before the Pirates used a timeout. A solo stuff from Elise Goetzinger closed out the opening frame with CU hitting .423. Martin had six digs, two kills and an ace and Norah Sis contributed five kills and three digs.
The Bluejays opened up an 11-4 run in the second set, including three consecutive aces by Sis. Seton Hall's best stretch came of the night when it closed within 17-15 to prompt a Bluejay timeout, but CU scored eight of the next nine points to take the set. Martin had three kills and Sis an ace and kill to close out the game. CU had 14 kills and served eight aces in the second set as the Pirates managed just five kills and three digs.
Seton Hall's lone lead of the night came after a Madison Klungel kill to open the third set. CU countered with the next three points and did not trail again. Leading 9-5, Martin served five aces during a 12-0 blitz that only ended after Seton Hall won a challenge. CU kept up the pressure down the stretch, including the first career kill by Sophia Wendlick, before closing the show with a kill by Destiny Ndam-Simpson. Maddy Blinovic had 10 digs in the third set alone and CU owned a 16-5 lead in kills during the finale.
Martin approached a triple-double, finishing with 11 kills, 13 digs and eight aces on .429 hitting. Sis recorded 10 kills and four aces, while both Kiara Reinhardt and Elise Goetzinger notched six kills. Bilinovic topped all players with 16 digs. Creighton finished the contest with 44 kills, 44 digs, four blocks and 15 aces against just four serving miscues. The Jays hit .356 in the sweep.
Seton Hall was led by eight kills by Senna Roberts-Navarro, while Klungel supplied 14 assists. The Pirates tallied 19 kills, 24 digs, one ace and no blocks on .090 hitting.
Creighton hosts its final regular-season home match this season on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it welcomes Georgetown to Omaha. The Bluejays can clinch at least a. share of its 11th consecutive BIG EAST regular-season title with a victory. CU will honor its seniors following the match.
