Martin Records 1,000th Kill as #5 Volleyball Captures Eighth Outright BIG EAST Title

Bluejays win 19th consecutive contest
CHICAGO, Ill. – Junior Ava Martin collected her 1,000th career kill and recorded a match-high 20 kills as the fifth-ranked Creighton Volleyball team clinched its eighth outright BIG EAST regular-season title with a 3-1 win over DePaul on Friday, Nov. 22.
Creighton (26-2, 17-0 BIG EAST) defeated the Blue Demons by scores of 24-26, 25-21, 25-13 and 25-15.
Martin paced the Bluejays offense with a season-high 20 kills on .400 hitting, while senior Norah Sis added 14 kills and 12 digs for her 39th career double-double. Senior Elise Goetzinger added in 11 kills of her own on .500 hitting, as Kendra Wait collected 42 assists, 10 digs and eight blocks to extend her school-record number double-doubles to 70. Senior Kiara Reinhardt also collected a match-high 11 blocks as the Bluejays hit .292 and finished the match with 57 kills, 56 digs, 15 blocks and five aces.
DePaul (18-11, 10-7 BIG EAST) was led by 15 kills from preseason All-BIG EAST selection Jill Pressly, and eight kills from Luisa Juncu. Rachel Krasowski snagged a team-high 15 digs, while Amanda Saeger dished out 18 assists. The Blue Demons hit just .095 and finished with 42 kills, 48 digs, five blocks and an ace.
DePaul opened the night with a 26-24 victory in set one as neither team led by more than three during the opening frame. The Bluejays led 8-6 after a trio of blocks from Reinhardt and Wait, before the Blue Demons used a 4-0 spurt to take a 10-8 advantage. Trailing 16-14 moments later, a stuff block from Sis and Goetzinger sparked a 3-0 burst to give the Jays a 17-16 lead, before back-to-back kills from Martin and Sis gave Creighton a 19-17 edge. DePaul answered with a 4-1 run to open up a 21-20 lead and did not trail for the remainder of the set.
Creighton turned the tide in the second set, as the Bluejays leveled the match with a 25-21 victory. The Bluejays surged out to a 9-3 lead, behind four blocks and three kills from three different Bluejays. DePaul would answer with a 6-1 run of their own, closing to within one at 10-9, before a block from Reinhardt and Destiny Ndam-Simpson slowed the Blue Demons momentum. Three straight kills from Ndam-Simpson and Martin pushed the Bluejays advantage out to 21-15 before a kill from Goetzinger game the Bluejays its largest lead of the set at 24-17 and Martin clinched the set five points later. Sis tallied six of her 14 kills during the Bluejays set win.
Set three saw the Bluejays hit a blistering .500 on its way to a 25-13 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Six different Bluejays recorded at least one kill during the frame with Martin leading the way with six. Creighton scored the first five points of the set and held leads of 13-3 and 22-10 as the Bluejays did not trail in the set.
Creighton ended the match with a decisive 25-15 victory in the fourth to clinch its 30th straight BIG EAST regular season win. DePaul scored the first point of the set, but a trio of service aces from Martin and Bilinovic highlighted a 7-1 run to force a DePaul timeout. The Blue Demons would score four of the next five points, before the Jays opened up a 15-8 lead on a kill from Goetzinger. Another block from Reinhardt and Wait pushed the Jays advantage out to 22-11, before the 20th kill of the night from Martin ended the match. DePaul hit negative during the frame with 10 errors to only eight terminations (-.062 hitting percentage).
Creighton will look to record this third perfect BIG EAST season when concludes the regular season against Xavier on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 12 p.m. in Cincinnati, Ohio.
