Martin earns first honor, Reinhardt second recognition this fall
OMAHA, Neb. -- Two more sweeps helped a pair of Creighton Volleyball student-athletes earn weekly BIG EAST honors on Monday as Kiara Reinhardt was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week and Ava Martin recognized as the Offensive Player of the Week.
Martin averaged 4.75 points, 4.33 kills, 0.50 blocks and 0.17 aces per set on .426 hitting as Creighton swept matches against St. John's and Villanova. The junior outside hitter had 13 kills, five digs and a block on .387 hitting in a victory vs. St. John's on Friday. The two-time All-BIG EAST choice followed that up with 13 kills, two digs, two blocks and an ace on .478 hitting in Sunday's sweep vs. Villanova. The Overland Park, Kan., native ranked third in the league in both kills and hitting percentage and was fifth in points per set. Martin has now hit .250 or better in every match of Creighton's 14-match win streak.
This is Martin's first BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week award this season, and third of her career after being recognized on Aug. 28 and Sept. 18 last season
Reinhardt led the BIG EAST with 2.67 blocks per set and added 1.83 kills and 0.33 digs per set in an unbeaten week for Creighton. The Cedarburg, Wis., product had a season-high 10 blocks to go with four kills, two digs and two assists on Friday vs. St. John's. She then contributed seven kills, six blocks and a pair of assists in a victory vs. Villanova. Reinhardt's efforts helped Creighton hold foes to .073 hitting on the week.
Reinhardt was previously honored as BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 23 this fall. She also picked up similar acclaim on both March 9, 2020 as well as Oct. 30, 2023.
No. 6 Creighton (21-2, 12-0 BIG EAST) returns to the court on Friday at 6 p.m. with a home match against Butler.
