OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton Volleyball earned its best AVCA Top 25 poll ranking in program history on Monday as the Bluejays finally moved past Stanford and into the No. 5 slot in the today's poll. The change came after six straight weeks being ranked sixth nationally where CU had dropped just two sets, and marks the first time any Creighton women's team has been ranked in the top five of any poll.
Winners of 14 straight matches, Creighton improved to 21-2 this season following 3-0 sweeps over St. John's and Villanova last weekend. The Bluejays have won a nation-leading 28 straight sets and dropped just one set en route to a 12-0 start in BIG EAST Conference play.
It's the 30th time overall that Creighton has been ranked in the AVCA Top 10, and ninth consecutive week this season. This is the 13th straight campaign that Creighton has spent at least one week in the Top 25.
The Bluejays are one of 15 schools (along with Baylor, BYU, Florida, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Nebraska, Oregon, Penn State, Pitt, Purdue, Stanford, Texas and Wisconsin) to have been ranked each of the last 57 polls. Creighton has been ranked in all but six of the past 126 weeks the AVCA has put out a Top 25 poll and 134 times in program history, which ranks 39th-most all-time. Creighton is 222-47 all-time when playing as a ranked team in the AVCA poll.
Five of Creighton's 2024 opponents are ranked in this week's poll. The Bluejays have already beaten then-No. 20 (and current No. 20) USC on Sept. 5th, and lost five-set road matches at then-No. 5 (and current No. 2) Nebraska (Sept. 10) and then-No. 4 (and current No. 4) Louisville (Sept. 15). CU also went to Lawrence, Kan., where it beat then-No. 6 (and current No. 9) Purdue (Sept. 20) as well as then-No. 10 (and current No. 8) Kansas (Sept. 21). BIG EAST rival Marquette is fifth among those teams, four spots behind a Missouri team that Creighton swept on Aug. 31 that is the tops among those "also receiving votes".
The top four teams in this week's AVCA poll were unchanged, with Pittsburgh, Nebraska, Penn State and Louisville ahead of Creighton.
The Bluejays also improved one spot to No. 5 in the fifth Monday edition this fall of the NCAA's official RPI and remained No. 5 in the seventh VolleyballMag Super 16 Media Poll of the season.
Creighton returns to the court on Friday at 6 p.m. with a home match against Butler.
