Baseball Returns to Sugar Land for Battle at the Ballpark

Omaha, Neb. -- After a sweep of three games last weekend at the Sugar Land Classic, Creighton Baseball (5-0) returns to the same ballpark this weekend as the Bluejays will face Air Force, Louisiana Tech and Army during the weekend of March 1-3.
Scouting the Bluejays
(2024: 5-0, 0-0 BIG EAST)
The bats remained sizzling hot in the second weekend of the season as Creighton has scored 71 runs in five games.
Staff ace Dominic Cancellieri continued to shine, picking up his second victory against Houston Christian. Cancellieri allowed one run against the Huskies, striking out six to earn the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.
At the plate Ben North was dynamic against HCU with a pair of grand slams and 10 RBI to tie a program record.
As a team the Bluejays are hitting .378, while the pitching staff has limited opponents to a .234 average and boasts a 3.29 ERA.
Scouting the Falcons
(2024: 4-4)
Air Force opened the season with series against Mississippi State and Navy as well as single games with Southern Miss and UNC Wilmington.
The Falcons swept their series with Navy, but fell to UNC
Wilmington 11-8.
As a team the Falcons enter the weekend hitting .244, led by Jay Thomason (.375), Christ Stallings (.345) and Jake Greiving (.300).
On the mound the Falcons have a team ERA of 4.64, while the expected starter on Friday Seungmin Shim has 17 strikeouts in 12 inning. He is 1-0, allowing three runs on four hits.
Scouting the Bulldogs
(2024: 8-0)
Similar to the Bluejays, Louisiana Tech has started the 2024 season very strong. The Bulldogs swept a four-game series from Northern Colorado, then took three from Kent State and bested McNeese State in a midweek battle.
The Bulldogs head into their midweek game hitting .314 as a team with five players hitting over .300. Michael Ballard leads La Tech hitting .448, while Ethan Bates and Dalton Davis come into the weekend at .375 and .367 respectively.
On the bump La Tech has been particularly good, with a team ERA of 2.39. Luke Nicholas was the Bulldogs Saturday starter against Kent State, he has a 3.60 ERA over two starts.
Scouting the Black Knights

Army comes to Texas riding a two-game win streak, taking down Stetson and Maine last weekend. Army faced Monmouth and Penn State in a pair of double headers on the first weekend of the season.
Army enters the Battle at the Ballpark hitting .260 as a team, led by Sam Ruta at .419 and Braden Golinski at .360.
On the mound the Golden Knights have a team ERA of 4.50, the projected starter for Bryce Brownlee. He brings an impressive 0.93 ERA in 9.2 innings, allowing one run despite walking eight and striking out eight.
Bluejay Baseball Sweeps BIG EAST Weekly Honors
Coming off a sweep of three games at the Sugar Land Classic, Creighton Baseball completed another sweep on Monday, February 26 as senior Dominic Cancellieri and sophomore Ben North claimed the BIG EAST Pitcher and Player of the Week.
Cancellieri earned his second win of the season, tossing five innings of one-run ball in Creighton's 22-1 win over host Houston Christian in the opening game of the Sugar Land Classic. The Bluejay ace allowed three hits and one walk, while striking out six in the victory.
Creighton's third baseman tied a pair school record with two grand slams and 10 RBI in the Bluejays' 22-1 win over Houston Baptist on Friday, February 23. He closed the weekend with three home runs, 11 RBI, six runs scored, an average of .714 (5-for-7), a slugging percentage of 2.286 and an on-base percentage of .778. North notched at least one hit in each of the Bluejays' three wins over the weekend, coming on a defensive replacement on Sunday and recording only one official at-bat.
Ben North's 10 RBI Day Equals Single-Game Record
Highlighted by a grand slams in consecutive innings, sophomore Ben North tied a Creighton single-game record with 10 RBI in the Bluejays' 22-1 win over Houston Christian on Friday, February 23. The only other time a Creighton player delivered 10 RBI in one game came on February 28, 1991 as Ryan Martindale did so against Grand View in a 31-6 win.
Bluejay Offense Amongst NCAA Leaders
Five Games into the 2024 season, the Bluejay offense has started off on a blazing pace. Creighton enters the weekend fourth in the NCAA in batting average (.376), first in on-base percentage
