Senior guard has started every game for 10th-ranked Bluejays
OMAHA, Neb. --Â Creighton senior Steven Ashworth has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award. He is the second Bluejay to be recognized with the honor since joining the league 11 seasons ago, joining 2021 winner Mitch Ballock.
Per the BIG EAST, the Sportsmanship Award winners are strong contributors to their respective teams on and off the court. The league's head coaches nominate and select the award winners. They are not permitted to vote for their own players.
A native of Alpine, Utah, Ashworth is finishing his first season in a Creighton uniform after spending three years at Utah State. He has started all 31 games for the Bluejays, averaging 10.5 points and 4.2 assists per game. He leads the team in free throw percentage (.879) and ranks second on the club with 68 three-pointers made. He has made a three-pointer in each of the last 15 games, and in league play only ranked second in assist/turnover ratio, eighth in three-pointers per game, eighth in assists per game and 28th in scoring.
Creighton is 15-3 when he scores in double-figures and 16-2 when he has one turnover or less, and he was one of 20 men named to the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Preseason Watch List.
The BIG EAST will announce the remaining individual awards: Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete on Wednesday, March 13.
After earning the No. 2 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament presented by Jeep, Creighton (23-8, 14-6 BIG EAST) will face either Providence or Georgetown on Thursday at 6 p.m. Central on FS1.
