Senior guard earns fourth All-America honor this season
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton guard Baylor Scheierman picked up All-America honors for the fourth time this month when The Sporting News voted him as a Third Team All-America on Tuesday.
Scheierman was previously named a Second Team All-American by Field of 68 in addition to Third Team accolades by ESPN.com and College Hoops Today.
Scheierman has starred for Creighton this winter, averaging 18.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. He leads the BIG EAST with 14 double-doubles and is in contention to become the first men's player in the last 20 years to lead a Power 6 Conference in both defensive rebounds (currently 249) and three-pointers made (currently 97, one behind the league leader).
He became the first Division I men's player in NCAA history to surpass 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 500 assists and 300 three-pointers, and became the 11th men's player in NCAA history to score at least 1,000 points at multiple Division I schools. As if that's not enough, Scheierman authored Creighton's first point/rebound/assist triple-double in program history on Feb. 13 vs. Georgetown, his 14 double-doubles are the most by a Bluejay in the last 40 seasons, and his 1,100 career defensive rebounds are the most by any player in the country in the last 25 seasons.
He's been named one of five finalists for the Julius Erving Award given to the nation's best small forward, and is also one of 20 players on the Wooden Award Late Season Watch List. A two-time BIG EAST Player of the Week this season, and a USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week once, Scheierman has made at least one three-pointer in 67-of-68 games in a Creighton uniform, including a program record 48 in a row to begin his Bluejay career. He was named a unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST pick on Sunday.
Scheierman is Creighton's first All-America selection by The Sporting News since Doug McDermott was a First Team pick (and National Player of the Year) in 2014 after being named a Second Team selection in 2012 and 2013. Other Bluejays recognized by The Sporting News as an All-American include Kyle Korver (2003, Second Team), Rick Apke (1977, Special Mention), Paul Silas (1964, Honorable Mention) and Ralph Langer (1943, Honorable Mention).
After earning the No. 2 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament presented by Jeep, Creighton (23-8, 14-6 BIG EAST) will face either Providence or Georgetown on Thursday at 6 p.m. Central on FS1.
