Senior shoots third-best score in the program's last 20 years
PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Shaun Campbell shot an 8-under 205 at the GCU Invitational to lead Creighton men's golf to a ninth-place finish on Wednesday in Phoenix, Ariz.
Campbell compiled rounds of 71, 66 and 68 to take fourth in the field of 93 competitors. His 66 was a season-low round and tied the best of his Bluejay career. It also matched the best loop by any Creighton player this season. Including his performance this week in the desert, the senior from New Zealand has now shot par or better in 29-of-63 rounds as a Bluejay. The 205 for Campbell tied the program's third-best 54-hole total in the last 20 years.
Grant Feldman continued his steady play, tying for 22nd place with a 212 total after scores of 71, 69 and 72. The Texan has now shot par or better in 11-of-18 competition rounds this season.
Freshman Owen Price and senior Charlie Zielinski both opened the tournament with rounds of 68. Price ended up tied for 56th after following that with rounds of 77 and 73 for a 218 aggregate, while Zielinski finished in a tie for 63rd after turning in a 77 and 75 to end play.
Senior Jackson Thompson also tied for 63rd place with scores of 71, 77 and 72 for a 220 total.
Creighton's 278 opening-round total tied the program's third-best round in team history, while its 852 total matched the program's third-best total that was also done last year in the same tournament.
Grand Canyon's Tommasso Zorzetto (65-65-68) earned a six-shot victory in the race for medalist honors after a blistering 15-under total to hold off runner-ups Russell Howlett (69-69-66=204) of Cal State Fullerton and Valparaiso's Caleb VanArrogan (66-68-70=204).
Cal State Fullerton (279-278-271=828) won the team title, topping a field of 16 squads with a 13-under total on the final day to finish 24-under overall. That was just enough to edge out host Grand Canyon (276-270-284=830).
The tournament was held at GCU Golf Course, a par 71 layout that measured 7,124 yards for the first two rounds on Tuesday and 7,206 yards for Wednesday's final round.
Creighton returns to the course in exactly one month for the Hawkeye Invitational on April 13-14 in Iowa City, Iowa.
