First duo in Bluejay history to be honored in same season.
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Associated Press named Creighton's Baylor Scheierman a Third Team All-American and Ryan Kalkbrenner an Honorable Mention All-American on Tuesday. It's the first time in program history that Creighton has had two men land All-America accolades from the AP in the same season.
The recognition is the sixth different All-American recognition this season for Scheierman, who has previously been selected a Second Team All-American by Field of 68 and 247Sports, and was a Third Team choice by The Sporting News, ESPN.com and College Hoops Today. For Kalkbrenner, it's his second All-American honor of the postseason, joining his Honorable Mention All-America status per 247Sports.
Scheierman is the fourth player in program history to be named a First, Second or Third Team All-American by the Associated Press, joining Third Team pick Paul Silas (1963-64), Second Team pick Kyle Korver (2002-03) and three-time First Team All-America selection Doug McDermott (2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14). McDermott was named the National Player of the Year by the organization in 2013-14.
Scheierman has starred for Creighton this winter, averaging 18.4 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. He leads the BIG EAST with 15 double-doubles and is in contention to become the first men's player in the last 20 years to lead a Power 6 Conference in both defensive rebounds (currently 262) and three-pointers made (currently 99, five behind the league leader).
He became the first Division I men's player in NCAA history to surpass 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 500 assists and 300 three-pointers, and the 11th men's player in NCAA history to score at least 1,000 points at multiple Division I schools. As if that's not enough, Scheierman authored Creighton's first point/rebound/assist triple-double in program history on Feb. 13 vs. Georgetown, his 15 double-doubles are the most by a Bluejay in the last 40 seasons, and his 1,113 career defensive rebounds are the most by any player in the country in the last 25 seasons.
He's been named one of five finalists for the Julius Erving Award given to the nation's best small forward, and was a unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST choice. A two-time BIG EAST Player of the Week this season, and a USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week once, Scheierman has made at least one three-pointer in 68-of-69 games in a Creighton uniform, including a program record 48 in a row to begin his Bluejay career.
Prior to Kalkbrenner, Creighton has had 10 previous Honorable Mention All-Americans pick up a total of 15 accolades, a list that includes Rick Apke (1975-76, 1976-77, 1977-78), Benoit Benjamin (1983-84, 1984-85), Rodney Buford (1998-99), Marcus Foster (2017-18), Kyle Korver (2001-02), Vernon Moore (1984-85), Bob Portman (1967-68), Paul Silas (1961-62, 1962-63), Booker Woodfox (2008-09) and Marcus Zegarowski (2019-20, 2020-21).
A senior center, Kalkbrenner averages 17.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. He leads the BIG EAST and ranks in the top six nationally in both blocked shots (3.0) and field goal percentage (.650).
The Florissant, Mo., product ranked seventh in the BIG EAST with 17.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in league contests. His 97 blocks are CU's most since 1984-85 and his 296 career rejections rank second in Bluejay history. Kalkbrenner has been named a finalist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, given to the nation's best center, and joined Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning as the only men to be named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year three times or more.
Last week Kalkbrenner was named an Honorable Mention All-American by 247Sports. He's also earned Second Team All-BIG EAST plaudits and Second Team All-District recognition from the NABC.
Creighton (23-9) returns to the court on Thursday when it opens play in the NCAA Tournament at 12:30 p.m. Central in Pittsburgh, Pa., against Akron (24-10).
