Scheierman named to First Team; Alexander and Kalkbrenner on Second Team
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton triumvirate of Baylor Scheierman, Ryan Kalkbrenner and Trey Alexander have earned All-District Honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Scheierman was named to the First Team while Kalkbrenner and Alexander were Second Team selections in District 5.
The All-District honors are voted on by NABC-member coaches across NCAA Division I. The NABC will release its All-America team on Wednesday.
Baylor Scheierman
Scheierman has starred for Creighton this winter, averaging 18.4 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. He leads the BIG EAST with 15 double-doubles and is in contention to become the first men's player in the last 20 years to lead a Power 6 Conference in both defensive rebounds (currently 262) and three-pointers made (currently 99, five behind the league leader).
He became the first Division I men's player in NCAA history to surpass 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 500 assists and 300 three-pointers, and the 11th men's player in NCAA history to score at least 1,000 points at multiple Division I schools. As if that's not enough, Scheierman authored Creighton's first point/rebound/assist triple-double in program history on Feb. 13 vs. Georgetown, his 15 double-doubles are the most by a Bluejay in the last 40 seasons, and his 1,113 career defensive rebounds are the most by any player in the country in the last 25 seasons.
He's been named one of five finalists for the Julius Erving Award given to the nation's best small forward, and was a unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST choice. A two-time BIG EAST Player of the Week this season, and a USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week once, Scheierman has made at least one three-pointer in 68-of-69 games in a Creighton uniform, including a program record 48 in a row to begin his Bluejay career.
This is the third time Scheierman has been named All-District by the NABC. He was a Second Team All-District 5 pick last year after being a First Team All-District 12 honoree in 2021-22 while enrolled at South Dakota State. He's been part of five All-America teams this month, having been selected a Second Team All-American by Field of 68 and 247Sports, and was a Third Team choice by The Sporting News, ESPN.com and College Hoops Today.
Trey Alexander
Trey Alexander was named Second Team All-District to go along with his Second Team All-BIG EAST honors this winter. In league play, Alexander led the BIG EAST with 38.2 minutes per game, was third with both 18.6 points and 5.2 assists per game, and ranked 10th in free-throw percentage (.843).
The Oklahoma City, Okla., product owns four double-doubles this season and leads the country's Power 6 players in minutes per game. He is on pace to become the BIG EAST's first player since at least 1992-93 to average at least 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.75 assists per game over the course of a season.
Ryan Kalkbrenner
Senior Ryan Kalkbrenner averages 17.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. He leads the BIG EAST and ranks in the top six nationally in both blocked shots (3.0) and field goal percentage (.650).
The Florissant, Mo., product ranked seventh in the BIG EAST with 17.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in league contests. His 97 blocks are CU's most since 1984-85 and his 296 career rejections rank second in Bluejay history. Kalkbrenner has been named a finalist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, given to the nation's best center, and joined Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning as the only men to be named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year three times or more.
This is the second straight year Kalkbrenner has picked up acclaim from the NABC, as he earned First Team All-District 5 recognition last season. Last week Kalkbrenner was named an Honorable Mention All-American by 247Sports.
Creighton (23-9) returns to the court later this week when it opens play in the NCAA Tournament on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. Central in Pittsburgh, Pa., against Akron (24-10).
