Senior guard leads BIG EAST in double-doubles, defensive rebounding and three-pointers made
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton guard Baylor Scheierman picked up his first All-America honor of the season when the Aurora, Neb., native was named a Third Team All-America selection by ESPN.com.
Scheierman has starred for Creighton this winter, averaging 18.5 points, 8.9 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. He leads the BIG EAST with 14 double-doubles and is on pace to become the first men's player in the last 20 years to lead a Power 6 Conference in both defensive rebounds (currently 241) and three-pointers made (currently 93).
He became the first Division I men's player in NCAA history to surpass 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 500 assists and 300 three-pointers, and became the 11th men's player in NCAA history to score at least 1,000 points at multiple Division I schools. As if that's not enough, Scheierman authored Creighton's first point/rebound/assist triple-double in program history on Feb. 13 vs. Georgetown, his 14 double-doubles are the most by a Bluejay in the last 40 seasons, and his 1,092 career defensive rebounds are the most by any player in the country in the last 25 seasons.
He's been named one of five finalists for the Julius Erving Award given to the nation's best small forward, and is also one of 20 players on the Wooden Award Late Season Watch List. A two-time BIG EAST Player of the Week this season, and a USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week once, Scheierman has made at least one three-pointer in 66-of-67 games in a Creighton uniform, including a program record 48 in a row to begin his Bluejay career.
Scheierman was one of four players with BIG EAST ties selected by ESPN.com writer Jeff Borzello on the All-America team, joining Second Team choice Tyler Kolek (Marquette), fellow Third Team selection Tristen Newton (UConn) and Honorable Mention pick Devin Carter (Providence).
Though online records are incomplete, it is believed that Scheierman is the first Creighton player to be bestowed ESPN.com All-America recognition since Doug McDermott was a First Team choice in 2013.
No. 10 Creighton (22-8, 13-6 BIG EAST) visits Villanova on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Central in a game that will be nationally-televised on FOX.
