Bluejays Falter Late, Fall 3-2 in 10 Innings

Queens, N.Y. -- Creighton Baseball dropped its seventh of its last eighth game in BIG EAST play with a 3-2 loss in 10 innings to St. John's in the first of two games on Saturday, May 4.
The Bluejays fell to 31-13 on the season and 4-9 in BIG EAST action, while St. John's moved to 30-11-1 overall and 10-4 in conference play.
A pitchers' duel between Cade Lommel and St. John's Evan Chaffee moved the game into the fifth, when Lommel was forced to leave with an apparent injury.
St. John's cracked the scoreboard first with a run in the sixth inning on an RBI ground out by Garrett Scavelli.
Creighton responded with two runs in the seventh as Nolan Clifford opened the frame with a double and Ben North blasted a two-run homer with two down.
The Bluejays took the lead into the bottom of the ninth. Down to their final two outs, St. John's pinch hitter Chad Falcon was hit by a pitch, then Luke Orbon connected on an RBI double. Creighton closer Mason Koch forced extra innings with a ground out and a pop out.
Creighton opened the tenth with a leadoff single from Colby Canales, but were unable to take the lead. Ben Beauchamp ended the game with the third pitch of the bottom of the tenth, sending a 1-1 offering over the left field wall for his fifth home run of the season.
Koch took the loss (4-1), allowing two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings, while Sam Mettert earned the win for the Red Storm getting the final out of the tenth on one pitch.
Creighton and St. John's wrap up the series with the second game of the doubleheader set to begin at 3:20 pm (CT).
