Second Half Goals From Thomas and Manriki Propel Bluejays to 2-1 Win Over Iowa State For First Win of the Season

AMES, Iowa – Behind a pair of second half goals by sophomore Tilly Thomas and senior Azumi Manriki, the Creighton women's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 win over Iowa State for their first win of the season and the inaugural Tea Cup on Sunday, Aug. 18 at Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames, Iowa.   
 
With the win, Creighton improved to 1-1-0 on the season as head coach Jimmy Walker secured his first win as a Bluejay and his first career win over a Power 5 team. Iowa State, however, fell to 1-1-0 with the loss.
 
Iowa State opened the scoring in the 12th minute of play as the Cyclones drew a foul inside the 18-yard box to earn their first penalty kick of the season. Junior Magdalena Keck stepped to the spot and buried the PK into the top right corner of the goal to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.
 
Creighton would gain control over the course of the final 33 minutes of the first half and held an 8-1 advantage in shot but were unable to deliver the equalizer as the teams headed to the locker room.
 
Coming out of the break, Creighton quickly leveled the match at 1-1 in the 48th minute with the first goal of the season by Thomas. Fellow sophomore Anja Jestrovic set the play in motion delivering a corner kick into the box to Thomas, who chipped in the equalizer for the Bluejays.
 
The Bluejays continued to pile on the pressure, taking the lead in the 74th minute as Manriki finished off a cross into the box from junior Andrine Westlie for her second goal of the season.
 
Iowa State put together one final surge down the stretch but were unable to find an equalizer as Creighton secured the 2-1 victory.
 
Creighton closed the match with a 12-3 advantage in shots, while earning a 4-0 edge in corner kicks. Junior Alyssa Zalac earned her first career win in goal, collecting one save.
 
Creighton will take an 11-day break before opening the home portion of the schedule against Western Michigan inside Morrison Stadium on Aug. 29 at 4 p.m.
