OMAHA, Neb. - Powered by a pair of first half goals from senior Ariana Mondiri and Marissa LeVine, as well as a second half banger from Azumi Manriki, the Creighton women's soccer team delivered a 3-0 shutout victory over Western Michigan on Thursday morning.
With the win, Creighton improved to 2-1-0 in the Jimmy Walker era, while the Broncos recorded their first loss this season, falling to 2-1-1 overall.
The Bluejays stormed ahead early, taking a quick two goal lead goal just 15 minutes into the match. A stunning pass from senior Maddie Radke led to the match's first goal, as Mondiri bolted past the Broncos back line before slotting a shot through the legs of WMU's Ava Wilberding for her first goal of the season.
Creighton added to its lead less than five minutes later when LeVine netted her first goal of the season, blasting home a rocket past the outstretch reach of Wilberding from 25-yards out. It was the Bluejays first time scoring two goals in the first 15 minutes of the first half since netting two early goals in a victory over Omaha on Sept. 16, 2017.
Creighton continued to dominate on the offensive end for the rest of the half, leading the Broncos 8-4 in shot attempts heading into the break.
Midway through the second half Manriki capitalized on a free kick opportunity, touching the back of the net for the third time this season to give the Jays' a 3-0 lead. With the second half goal, Manriki became the first Bluejay since Toch Ihemelu in 2006 to score at least one goal in the first three matches of the season.
The Bluejays defense held strong throughout the remainder of the match, as junior goalkeeper Alyssa Zalac collected the first shutout of her collegiate career. With Creighton's scoring outburst to begin the match, the Bluejays were able hold an 11-8 advantage in shots while holding possession 59 percent of the time.
Creighton has a quick turnaround and returns to the pitch to battle in-state rival Nebraska on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. at Hibner Stadium in Lincoln, Neb.
