Second Half Explosion Lifts Men's Soccer to 5-3 Win Over Drake

Omaha, Neb. -- Playing in triple-digit temperatures (100 at game time and climbing as high as 102), the offense for Creighton Men's Soccer caught fire with four goals in the second half as the Bluejays defeated Drake 5-3 on Sunday, August 25.
The victory moved the Bluejays to 1-0-1 on the season, while Drake fell to 1-1-0.
Creighton opened the scoring in the 10th minute (9:28) as sophomore Miguel Arilla punched in a shot by Ali Ramadan that was deflected by Drake goalkeeper Tomas Butkovic.
Scheduled water breaks every 15 minutes gave the players a bit of a break, but in the 28th minute the game surged into a chaotic state as Drake fired a four shot series as Ryder Barrett glanced a shot off the post, then Eskil Gjerde was denied three times, or so it seemed. At the next stoppage, officials went to video review and ruled the final shot as a goal to knot the game at 1-1. In an ironic twist Drake head coach Tim Flinn was issued a yellow card as his team earned a goal during the review.
Less than two minutes later another call went the Bulldogs way as Drake drew a penalty kick when Creighton's Mark O'Neill was called as he leaped for a header just inside the left corner. Bulldog midfielder Damian Segura converted the chance with a shot to the lower right corner to give Drake a 2-1 edge with 28:22 on the clock.'
The match remained in Drake's favor into halftime, but the momentum changed quickly in the second half.
In the 47th minute the Bluejays benefited from a penalty call on a corner insertion from Ismael Reyes. Drake's Cole Schrage was whistled for a hand ball, giving the Bluejays a penalty kick. Freshman Gavrilo Civric quickly converted to knot the match at 2-2.
Civric wasted little time to grab his second tally as the Serbian national pushed in an unassisted goal in the 49th minute (48:51), stealing a pass into the Drake box for a breakaway goal into an empty net.
The Bluejays' fourth goal of the contest game in the 70th minute as sophomore Ali Ramadan finish a series of passes from freshman Ismael Reyes and senior Miguel Ventura into the center for a one-on-one with Butkovic. Ramadan won the battle for his first goal as a Bluejay.
Creighton's final tally came in the 80th minute as junior Ryan Brakke collected a failed Bulldog clear in the middle of the box for his first goal of 2024.
Drake added a goal in the 85th minute as Chase Wakefield finished a series from Dalton Visconti and Segura.
The Bluejays closed the game with a 20-11 shot advantage as well as a 4-3 edge on corners created.
The Bluejays return to the pitch on Thursday, August 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the first match of the Jesuit Invitational against Loyola Chicago.
