NEW YORK (Aug. 27, 2024) – Creighton's Malvika Shukla and Marcos Gonzalez have been named recipients of the 2023-24 BIG EAST Institutional Female and Male Scholar-Athlete Awards. The selection were made by the Conference's Academic Affairs Committee. Each institutional winner receives $2,000 toward graduate studies, with the BIG EAST's overall Female and Male Scholar-Athletes of the Year each earning $4,000.
Shukla, Creighton's 2023-24 Carl M. Reinert, S.J. Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, wrapped up her four-year tennis career owning a 3.98 cumulative GPA while earning a bachelor's degree in exercise science. An eight-time member of the Creighton honor roll, Shukla also earned an ITA Scholar-Athlete award and was named to the BIG EAST all-academic team four times in her Bluejay career.
On the court, Shukla capped off her career at Creighton as one of the most decorated Bluejays in program history. The Mumbai, India product was a two-time First Team All-BIG EAST selection and finished her illustrious career ranked fifth all-time on Creighton's career wins list with 125 total victories. Her 68 career singles wins are the fifth-most in school history, while her 58 combined doubles wins are ranked ninth-most all-time.
Gonzalez is a native of Phoenix, Ariz., who broke Creighton's 8K cross country record in 2022. The Biology/Pre-Med major was named to the Creighton Dean's List both semesters during the 2023-24 academic year. He led CU in four of his five cross country races last fall, including a fourth-place showing while helping the Bluejays to the Platte River Rumble title. He also garnered BIG EAST Runner of the Week honors on October 4th last fall. In the spring he recorded CU's first points ever at the BIG EAST Track Championships with a sixth-place finish in the steeplechase, finishing the 3,000 meter race in a season-best time of 9:08.98 that was just behind his own school-record.
