Morgan Becker ties for 13th place
EDEN, Utah -- Morgan Becker shot an even-par 72 in the second round to lead the Creighton Women's Golf team to a tie for ninth-place at the rain-shortened Kelsey Chugg Invitational. The event was halted after 36 holes as heavy overnight thunderstorms made the course unplayable and canceled Tuesday's final round.
A transfer from Oklahoma Baptist, Becker led the Bluejays as she tied for 13th with rounds of 81 and 72. Her second round featured five birdies and five bogeys on the Wolf Creek Resort Golf Course, which measured 6,097 yards on its Par 72 layout.
Another newcomer, freshman Julia Karmazin, followed up an opening-round 82 with a second-round 75 to tie for 29th place with a 157 aggregate.
Sophomore Annie Dawson finished with loops of 80 and 79 for a 159 total to tie for 37th place, and classmate Katharine Marshall tied for 46th with circuits of 77 and 84.
Rounding out CU's line-up was freshman Kinsley Smith, who tied for 60th place after posting rounds of 85 and 84 in the second tournament of her collegiate career.
Karsen Morrison played as an individual and produced scores of 83 and 80 to tie for 49th place.
California Baptist (303-292=595) won the team title by three shots over host Weber State (308-290=598) to top a field featuring 11 teams. Creighton opened with a 320 before improving 10 shots in Monday's second round to tie with Portland State (312-318=630) for ninth place, just two shots behind Southern Utah (315-313=628).
The tournament included 70 golfers and was won by California Baptist's Samantha Dizon (74-70=144), one shot better than teammate Pusanisa Ekkantrong (72-73=145), Weber State's Cala Korman (75-70=145) and Utah Tech's Maria Purroy Galan (74-71=145).
Creighton returns to action in two weeks when it hosts the Big O Classic at Oak Hills Country Club on Sept. 30-Oct. 1.
