OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's soccer team pushed No. 22 Xavier to the wire but could not overcome the Musketeers pressure, dropping a physical battle, 2-1, on Wednesday night at Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Neb.
The loss drops the Bluejays to 4-6-2 on the season and 1-2-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Musketeers improved to 8-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in league action.
Xavier struck first in the 12th minute after capitalizing off a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box. Reese Slater's initial shot was denied by Bluejay goalkeeper Alyssa Zalac, but Natalie Bain pounced on the rebound and buried it into the back of the net at the 11:10 mark to give the Musketeers an early 1-0 advantage.
Xavier would control possession throughout the remainder of the first half, holding an 11-1 advantage in shots at the break.
Creighton, however, would pull even in the early moments of the second half as graduate student Ariana Mondiri battled through a pair of Xavier defenders and slipped a centering pass to Mallory Connealy in the middle of the 18-yard box. Making a run through the box, Connealy slotted a shot in the right corner of the goal for her second goal of the season at the 48:02 mark.
Xavier quickly answered less than three minutes later, as Samantha Erbach delivered a cross into the box that found the foot of Regan Dancer, who buried it into the back of the net to put the Musketeers back in front, 2-1 with 50:59 showing on the clock.
Creighton continued to battle and nearly found another equalizer in the 86th minute when Mondiri set up Kendal Radke at the top of the 18-yard box, but her shot sailed just wide of the left post.
Xavier controlled the stat sheet, outshooting Creighton by a decisive 17-5 margin, while both teams created a pair of corner kick opportunities. The match proved physical from start to finish with the intensity carrying throughout all 90 minutes of play.
The Bluejays are back on the road this Saturday (Oct. 4) as they visit UConn for a match at 5:30 p.m. CT in Storrs, Conn.
