STORRS, Conn. – One second-half goal made all the difference as the Creighton women's soccer team fell 1-0 to UConn on Saturday evening at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.
The loss dropped Creighton to 4-7-2 on the season and 1-3-1 in BIG EAST play, while UConn climbed to 7-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in league action.
A back-and-forth first half saw both teams struggle to get the attack going as neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes.
Creighton held a slim 6-5 advantage in shots in the opening frame, creating its most dangerous scoring chance in the 25th minute as a looping header from Mallory Connealy was swatted away off the crossbar by UConn's goalkeeper Ava Yamas to keep things scoreless at the break.
Coming out of the locker room, UConn increased its offensive pressure firing five shots at goal in the first 20 minutes of the second half. The Huskies looked to have taken a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute, but a goal from Lina Dantes was nullified by an offsides call.
UConn, however, took advantage of a Bluejay foul in their attacking third in the 78th minute as Anna Carson punched in her first goal of the year on a free kick to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Creighton pushed to deliver an equalizer down the stretch but was denied by Yamas on its only shot on goal from Jalen Chaney.
UConn closed the match holding a 13-9 advantage in shots and a slim 4-3 edge in corner kicks created, while senior Alyssa Zalac snared four saves in goal.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 11 when they visit Providence at 11 a.m. CT.
