PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A late second half goal from Ariana Mondiri in the 83rd minute earns Creighton Women's Soccer a 3-3 draw at Providence on Saturday morning.
The draw marked the Bluejays first result in Rhode Island since 2013 as Creighton moves to 4-7-3 overall and 1-3-2 in BIG EAST play. Providence meanwhile moved to 1-2-2 in league action and to 4-4-3 on the year.
An eventful opening 10 minutes saw the Bluejays grab an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute with an unassisted goal from senior Tori Gillis. Gillis notched the first goal of her career, blasting a shot into the back of the net after recovering a loose ball off a free kick at the top of the 18-yard box.
Providence, however, delivered the equalizer 51 seconds later as Isabella Kloock-Jensen earned a penalty kick, drawing a foul inside the 18-yard box. Senior Ella McBride stepped in and converted the PK to level the score at 1-1.
Creighton continued to pressure the Friars throughout the first half, taking a 2-1 lead in the 38th minute on a goal from sophomore Anna Bragg. Senior Ella Offer assisted on the play, sending a cross into the box to freshman Jalen Chaney, who headed on a pass to the back post where Bragg chipped in her third goal of the season.
The Bluejays fired off eight shots in the first period compared to Providence's five, while Creighton created five corner kick opportunities and took a 2-1 lead into the break.
Coming out of the break, the Friars turned on their offense, touching the back of the net in the 56th minute as Courtnee Pickles slotted a second chance shot into the back of the net for her second goal of the season to level the contest at 2-2.
Providence would then take its first lead of the match in the 66th minute as Kristin Middaugh tapped in her first goal of the season off a cross to the back post from McBride to give the Friars a 3-2 advantage.
Creighton pushed to find an equalizer down the stretch, earning multiple scoring chance in the final third. Gillis nearly netted her second goal of the game with a head off the cross bar, while Mondiri drew a penalty kick but was denied by a diving save from Providence's Ellie Thallman to preserve their one-one lead.
Mondiri, however, bounced back and delivered the equalizer for the Bluejays in the 83rd minute on a banger from 25-yards out to tie the score at 3-3. Mondiri's game-tying goal marked her fifth goal of the season and the Bluejays second game-tying goal in the final 10 minutes of a match this year.
The Bluejays outshot Providence 16-11 and held a 10-0 edge in corner kicks created, while graduate goalkeeper Alyssa Zalac snared two saves in the draw.
Creighton continues its three-match road swing on Saturday, Oct. 18 at DePaul. The Match is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT in the Windy City.
