CHICAGO, Ill. – Behind a pair of second half goals from Ariana Mondiri and Jalen Chaney, the Creighton Women's Soccer team rallied for a 2-1 win over DePaul on Saturday afternoon at Wish Field in Chicago, Ill.
With the victory, the Bluejays moved into fifth in the BIG EAST standing, improving to 5-7-3 overall and 2-3-2 in BIG EAST play. DePaul, meanwhile, moved to 4-10-1 on the year and 1-5-1 in league action with the loss.
Despite controlling possession and the pace of play throughout the opening 45 minutes, Creighton saw itself down 1-0 at the break.
DePaul broke a scoreless tie in the 31st minute as Sienna Gonzales chipped in her second goal of the season off a cross from Grace Menser in the middle of the 18-yard box to give the Blue Demons a 1-0 lead.
The remainder of the match saw Creighton attack at every opportunity, closing the match with 17 shots, including eight of which were on goal.
Still down 1-0 early in the second half, Creighton pressed to find an equalizer and delivered in the 48th minute with a one-timer from Mondiri in the middle of the box. The play developed with a perfect through ball down the left side of the box from Abigail Santana to Chaney. On the run, Chaney delivered a cross to Mondiri, who hammered home her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Creighton continued to pile on the pressure over the next 25 minutes, before finding sophomore Anna Bragg in space along the right side. The Omaha native beat a defender, then drew a foul in the box attempting a cross to multiple Bluejays making a run. The resulting penalty kick was converted by Chaney, giving the Bluejays a 2-1 lead in the 71st minute.
Creighton held on down the stretch, as senior goalkeeper Alyssa Zalac smother four saves in the second half to earn her fifth win of the season, while moving into a tie with Katie Sullivan (2018-20) for 10th on Creighton's career goalkeepers victory list with her 13th win as a Bluejay.
The Bluejays closed the match with a 17-11 edge in shots, while DePaul owned a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks created.
Creighton returns home and to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 22 when they host Seton Hall at 7 p.m. inside Morrison Stadium.
