#13 Volleyball Steadies Red Storm in 3-0 Sweep

OMAHA, Neb. -- Led by 14 kills from Ava Martin and steadied by 18 digs from Sydney Breissinger, No. 13 Creighton Volleyball navigated a 3-0 sweep of the St. John's Red Storm on Friday, October 17. Set scores for the match were 25-12, 26-24 and 25-15.
The win lifted Creighton to 14-5 on the season and 7-0 in BIG EAST play, while St. John's fell to 6-15 overall and 2-6 in conference contests.
In the opening set the Bluejays took control with an early five point burst. Knotted at 2-2, consecutive kills by Martin and Annalea Maeder got Creighton rolling. The run continued via a service ace from Maeder, then Kiara Reinhardt and Jaya Johnson delivered back-to-back blocks of Ella Parker to give the Jays a 7-2 lead. Throughout the set the Bluejays continued to apply pressure, stretching their edge to the winning margin of 25-12. In the frame Creighton delivered five aces and held St. John's to a .000 hitting percentage with four blocks
The Bluejays seemed poised to run away with set number two, vaulting out to a 5-0 lead to force a Red Storm timeout and extending their edge to as much as 10-3. St. John's chipped away to pull even at 14-14. Despite allowing St. John's to force five ties, including one at 24-24, Creighton refused to relinquish the lead. Finally taking the set with a kill from Reinhardt to take a 25-24 lead, then forcing an error by the Red Storm to claim the set 26-24.
Energized by its rally in the second set, St. John's rolled out to an early 4-1 lead in the third stanza. The Bluejays answered quickly with a pair of kills from Martin and another by Johnson to knot the set at 4-4. Leading 11-9 moments later, Creighton took control with seven consecutive points to push their advantage to 18-9. Moved into the starting lineup in the third set, Nora Wurtz connected on three kills in five swings, while Martin posted five kills in the frame.
Martin was the only attacker to reach double-digit kills in the contest as St. John's was led by eight kills from Erin Jones and Marina Ghezzi.
In addition to her 18 digs, Breissinger closed the match with four of the Bluejays' nine service aces.
Creighton returns to action on Sunday, October 19 as the Bluejays host Seton Hall at 12:30 p.m. in the annual Pink Out match.
