OMAHA, Neb. – Playing a woman down for the final 62 minutes, the Creighton Women's Soccer team kept pace in the race for the final spot in the BIG EAST Tournament, delivering a 3-0 shutout victory over Seton Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 22 inside Morrison Stadium.
With the win, the Bluejays improved to 6-7-3 overall and 3-3-2 in BIG EAST play, moving into fifth in the BIG EAST standings. Seton Hall, meanwhile, fell to 3-8-5 on the year and 0-7-1 in league action.
Creighton appeared to have broken a scoreless tie in the 28th minute after a Seton Hall turnover in the attacking third led to a brilliant goal from Ariana Mondiri on the left side of the box. However, after review, the goal was nullified and resulted in a red card being shown to freshman Jalen Chaney.
Despite being down a player, Creighton managed to find the back in the 33rd and 38th minutes to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
Graduate Ariana Mondiri broke the nil-nil tie, lasering her team-leading seventh goal of the season into the back of the net in the 33rd minute off a centering pass from Clara Kulick from the top of the 18-yard box.
Five minutes later, senior Tori Gillis gave the Bluejays a 2-0 lead, after heading home her second goal of the season off a free kick delivery at the back post from freshman Olivia Sides.
Coming out of the locker room, Creighton continued to pressure Seton Hall in the final third, adding an insurance tally in the 59th minute on a goal from senior Brynn Gardner. Recovering a loose ball along the far sideline, sophomore Olivia Duray played a ball cross field to Gardner, who turned and laced a banger into the top right corner of the goal to give the Jays a 3-0 advantage.
Creighton's defense dug in for the final 30 minutes, fending off six Seton Hall shots to earn three valuable points and the team's third shutout of the season.
The Bluejays finished the match with a 13-8 edge in shots, while also holding a slim 7-5 advantage in corner kicks created. Senior goalkeeper Alyssa Zalac snared a pair of saves and collected her third shutout of the season.
Creighton heads back out on the road for the final time in the regular season this weekend as they travel to Butler for a 6 p.m. match on Saturday, Oct. 25.
