PROVIDENCE, R.I. --Â The No. 13 Creighton Volleyball team extended its regular-season BIG EAST win streak to 40 with a 3-0 win at Providence on Friday, Oct. 24. Creighton ended the third set on a 9-2 run, including five aces from seniors Ava Martin and Annalea Maeder down the stretch.
Scores in favor of CU were 25-21, 25-18, 27-25. Creighton (16-5, 9-0 BIG EAST) improved to 18-0 all-time against Providence, winning 54-of-55 sets against the Friars. Creighton's 32 straight sets won against Providence is its second longest streak over another opponent ever.
"I thought Providence played phenomenal tonight. They served well, passed way above their average, especially in first set," said Creighton head coach Brian Rosen.
Creighton never trailed in a first set that featured seven ties. The Jays ended the set on a 5-2 run, getting two kills by Kiara Reinhardt, and a solo block by Nora Wurtz before PC handed the Jays the set with a service error. Creighton had 16 kills and 15 digs in the opener, led by four kills each from Abbey Hayes, Martin and Reinhardt, as Maeder dished a dozen assists.
Creighton upped its game in the second set en route to a 25-18 victory. A 4-0 run on Nora Wurtz serve, including a pair of aces, helped push the Bluejays in front 16-10. Reinhardt's 500th career block gave CU a 21-11 lead, and a kill from Hayes sent CU to the locker room with a 2-0 lead. Creighton hit .310 in the second set while PC hit just .083.
The teams traded the lead seven times in the third set before CU ultimately prevailed. The Friars took a 23-18 lead before Maeder served up a 6-0 run featuring three straight aces to earn a match point opportunity. The Friars staved off that match point and had an opportunity to extend the match at 25-24, only to see CU take the next three points to clinch the win. A kill by Reinhardt gave CU a sideout and the serve, and Martin finished off the contest with consecutive aces. Martin finished the set with seven kills and Maeder owned 15 assists in the finale.
"Anna's serve is special good but I don't want to have to expect her to make three or four aces in a row," noted Rosen. "We were able to side out and then Ava went on that run with another ace as well. I'd love to not continue to put ourselves in that situation."
Though it wasn't always easy, Rosen still found some positives with the sweep. "It's finding ways to win, a skill that all teams that want to make a tournament run have to have. We have to be more consistent and put teams away. We're in this situation too much where we're scrapping and clawing for sets right now and it's fighting for consistency and putting away teams that 'we're supposed to'. UConn's going to be playing for their lives tomorrow and we need to play with the fight that the teams we're facing are playing with."
Martin led all players with 16 kills and had three aces, while Maeder notched 38 assists, five aces and four digs. Creighton had 11 aces for the contest, including six in the final frame, and had 47 kills, 36 digs and four blocks on .252 hitting.
Audrey Kocon was PC's top performer, finishing with seven kills, eight digs, 10 assists and two aces. The Friars tallied 32 kills, 36 digs, five blocks and three aces while hitting .205.
Creighton is back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. when it visits Connecticut (15-5, 4-4 BIG EAST) in a match that will be broadcast on ESPN+.
